- 9. Samuel J. Waite 9. Samuel J. Waite was born 1660 at Portsmouth, Newport, Rhode Island. (FDR/CRA) He was the son of Samuel Waite and Hannah WHITMAN. Samuel died by 15 Apr 1752, Exeter, Rhode Island. (EWT) Nancy gives his birth date as 29 Dec 1666. Samuel's will was dated 1747 and proved Apr 1752. (IEL) "Samuel Waite resided in that part of Kingstown, Rhode Island which was set off as Exeter. 30 Mar 1693 he sold land called "Little Silver" to William Burrington at Portsmouth RI. On 12 Oct 1694 James Sampson and wife Hannah released their rights in this land sold by "our Samuel Waite" to William Burrington. This was Hannah Waite Sampson mother of the above Samuel. Samuel was made Freeman at Kingstown, Rhode Island 2 Feb 1685. Samuel sold 50 acres of land at Kingstown to James Reynolds Sr. for 12 pounds 7 May 1694. On 21 Apr 1705 he quitclaimed to his Uncle Reuben Waite of Dartmouth the lands that had formerly belonged to his grandfather Thomas Waite. In 1709 he and others bought 792 acres of vacant land in Narragansett. He conveyed lands to his sons over the years. He was a member of the Six Principal Baptist Church of Kingstown RI. This was North Kingstown RI. He was one of the signers of a petition dated 8 Sep 1729 sent to the Association of Baptist Churches meeting in General Court in Connecticut praying exemption from unjust taxation for the churches of their domination there (John Conner's Diary, Rhode Island Historical Society Collection VIII Pg. 84) Samuel's will was dated 30 Dec 1747 and names his wife Aylice then 81 years old, son Joseph land 200 acres where he now lives $50; son Samuel the west halfe of the homestead where he now has a house, children of deceased son Benjamin (d. 1745) Virtue, Abigail and John; money; Son John the east halfe of homestead and old part of House. Wife Aylice use of halfe of the house all indoor moveables and 18 pounds a year to be paid by John. Inventory and personal effects totaled 208 pounds 2 shillings." (EWT). He married Alice WIGHTMAN 1696 at North Kingstown, RI. (ER) She was born 29 Feb 1666 at Quidnessett, Washington, Rhode Island. (FDR) Alice died 1749 . (EWT) CRA gives her birth date as 9 Dec 1665 Kingston Washington RI. Alice was the daughter of George & Elizabeth (UPDIKE) WIGHTMAN. (EWT) George Wightman (1632-1722) was a descendant of Edward Wightman who was burned at the stake for heresy at Litchfield England 11 Apr 1612. He was supposedly the last advocate of religious liberty to be executed in England. George was Constable 1686; member of the Grand Jury 1687; and a member of the Town Council. He owned 7000 acres at Narragansett. Elizabeth Updike (1644-) was the daughter of Gilbert & Katherine (SMITH) UPDIKE and the granddaughter of Richard Smith. Gilbert was the son of Lodowick & Gertrude b. Wesel Germany. He was called Gysbert op Dyke and was bp. at St. Willitrode Church in Wesel 1605. He arrived in New York in 1635 and settled at Lloyd's Neck Long Island 1638-1640. Gilbert was the military Commandant at Ft. Good Hope in 1647 two years after signing a peace treaty with the Sachem of the Mohicans and the Hackensacks. The Commissary provided provisions for the colony. Gilbert m. Katherine at New Amsterdam 24 Sep 1643. They had seven children. Gilbert received a patent for Coney Island 24 May 1644. (RC).
