He married MARGARET RUTH OLDFIELD August 26, 1930 in Corning, Steuben County, New York, daughter of RAYMOND OLDFIELD and EVA PLUMLEY. She was born February 16, 1914 in Corning, Steuben Co., New York, and died June 15, 2002 in Montour Falls, Schuyler Co., New York.

John E. Rhoads

John E. Rhoads, 65, of Beaver Dams RD!, died Saturday at home following a lengthy illness.

He retired in August 1972 from the paint department of Corning Glass Works where he ad 36 years of service. he was a former resident of Big Flats and a member of the Community Baptist Church there. Mr. Rhoads was born in New York City July 21, 1907, son of John and Anna DeFretis Rhoads. He married Margaret Oldfield in 1929 at Bradford. He is survived by his widow, four sons, Ronald and Bryan of Beaver Dams, Basil of Springwater and Richard of Campbell, a daughter Mrs. Marjorie Easling of Dundee, two brothers, Charles Rhoads of Gibson, and Alfred Rhoads of Seneca Falls, a sister, Mrs. Dorothy Cook of Las Vegas, Nev: 17 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Friends may call today 2-4 P.M. and 7-9 P.M. at Phillips Funeral Home, Corning. Services will be held there Tuesday at 1 P.M. with the Rev. Walter Griffith officiating. Burial will be in Oldfield Cemetery, Ferenbaugh.

Montour Falls, NY. Margaret R. Rhoads, age 88, of Beaver Dams, New York died Saturday, 6/15/2002 at the Schuyler Skilled Nursing Facility in Montour Falls.

Margaret was born in Corning, New York on 2/16/1914 the daughter of Raymond and Eva (Plumley) Oldfield. She was the wife of John E. Rhoads who preceded her in death in 1973. She owned and operated Marjohns Upholstery in Big Flats, NY with her husband for many years. Mrs. Rhoads was a member of Ladies Auxiliary of the Loyal Order of the Moose in Corning and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 524 in Corning. She loved painting, doing craft work and knitting. Margaret was preceded in death by her daughter Marjorie Easling in 1992 and by a grandson, Steven Rhoads in 1989.

She is survived by four sons: Ronald Rhoads of Beaver Dams, Basil (Shirley) Rhoads of Beaver Dams, Richard (Patricia) Rhoads of ST. Petersburg, FLA, and Bryan (Kathleen) Rhoads of Beaver Dams; 20 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren, 7 great great children; several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call on Tuesday from 1 until 3 P.M. at Phillips Funeral Home, Inc. 17 W. Pulteney St, Corning where funeral services will be held at the conclusion of calling hours at 3:00 P.M. Burial will be in Oldfield Cemetery, Ferenbaugh.

The family will provide flowers and memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, Rochester Chapter, 242 Andrews St., Suite 405, Rochester, NY 14604.

Charles H. Rhoads

Charles H. Rhoads, 67, of 5 Cowan Ave, died today in Arnot-Ogden Memorial Hospital, Elmira following and extended illness. Born Sep. 2, 1909 in Wilmington, Del, he was the son of John and Anna Fratis Rhoads. He was married to the former Elinor J. VanEtten, who survives, on April 14, 1934 in Corning.

He was a sign painter for Corning Glass Works for 34 years and was a member of the American Baptist Community Church in Big Flats. Surviving besides his wife are two daughters, Mrs. Daniel (Betty Jo) Herr of Big Flats and Mrs. Robert (Sandra) Baldwin of Big Flats, a brother, Alfred of Seneca Falls,, a sister Mrs. Bernard (Dorothy) Cook of North Las Vegas, Nevada, and three grandchildren. Friends may call at the Carpenter Funeral Home, Corning, Wednesday 2-4 P.M. and 7-9 P.M. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 A.M. in the American Baptist Church in Big Flats with the Reverend Walter Griffith officiating. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery, Corning.

Elenor J. Rhoads

Montour Falls, New York. Elenor J. Rhoads, age 86 of Seneca View Nursing Home in Montour Falls, NY, passed away on Sunday, February 3, 2002. Mrs. Rhoads was born 2/25/1915 in Corning, New York the daughter of the late Granville and Gertie Bell Jones VanEtten.

Mrs. Rhoads was an active member of the American Baptist Community Church in Big Flats, NY. Elenor was a member and hostess of the Town of Corning Senior Citizens Club and taught the members how to make various crafts. Mrs. Rhoads was well known for her "Santa Claus" doll-making which she shared with many people.

Mrs. Rhoads was pre-deceased by her husband, Charles H. Rhoads, who passed away 3/22/1977. She was also pre-deceased by her sisters, Evelyn VanEtten Robinson, Joann Decker Hogan and Thelma Vanetten Totten.

Mrs. Rhoads is survived by her daughters and sons in law, Betty Jo and Daniel Herr of Big Flats and Sandra J. and Robert Baldwin of Big Flats, NY; three grandchildren and four great grandchildren; brother and sisters in law Kenneth and Norma Vanetten of Corning, NY and Margaret of Montour falls, NY;several nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends.

There will be no calling hours. Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. Interment in Hope Cemetery, Corning, NY. Those wishing may remember Mrs. Rhoads through memorials to the The American Baptist Community Church, 180 Hibbard Road, Horseheads, NY 14845 or the The American Heart Association.
