The Back Rhodes of Our Genealogy

We hope you find your missing links among ours

The following is from Phil Stucker, 293 Falcon LN, Kempner, TX  76539.

I am at a lost with my Rhodes/Rhoads family of So. IL.   My grandmother was Annie Ethel Rhoades/Rhodes/Rhoads born 3/24/1897 at Grandtower, IL on the MS River across and north of Cape Giardeau, MO. Her father was Joseph S Rhodes b: 8/16/ 1866 (68) he married Sarah Smith 1/9/1893 on the Franklin/Williamson Co. line in So IL near Corinth, IL. He died 6/11/1954 a retired coal miner in Herrin, IL. Joseph Rhodes' dau. throught the name of his parents to be a John Rhodes (from NC/TN area)who m. a Helen Blaunt/Blount. Joseph Rhodes' granddaughter (he lived last years with her parents) says he was indian to some degree as he had indian things in his trunk but he didn't speak about it much for fear of KKK. Her mother, Grace Clyde,(the youngest dau. was dark hair/eyed )looked quite aboriginal indian but the rest of the girls (Annie, Helen, Faye)all looked blue eyed/blond white. All through there were some Rhodes in Grandtower, none seem to fit. He supposedly had a brother Matt (Matthew), and another brother Henry and two sisters , possibly a Sally and ?.  Joseph's census for 1900 at Grandtower says he was born in IL but no telling who did the reporting as no family with him has been found in the 1870, 1880 census. There was a Heny there (like reported as a brother and the other brother never married) but his data says born in England). Never see a Matthew in any census in IL althrough heard my grandmother speak of him fondly many times, that he was a batchelor that lived in the woods along the MS River in a log shack and lived off the land never going to a town.
