2. DAVID3 RHODES (JOHN2, CHARLES1) was born Abt. 1742, and died 1794 in Albemarle County, Virginia. He married (1) SUSANNAH ANDERSON, daughter of NELSON ANDERSON and UNKNOWN. She was born Unknown, and died Aft. 1794. He married (2) MARY MILLS Abt. 1764. She was born Abt. 1744 in Caroline, VA, and died Unknown.

Notes for DAVID RHODES:

According to the Rev. Edgar Woods book on Albemarle County, David Rodes was the son of John Rodes who was born in 1697. John bought from James Armor 400 acres of land on the North Fork of the Rockfish River in an area that was described as St. Martin's parish, Louisa. He also purchased land on Moorman's River.

David Rodes lived on the north side of Moorman's river. According to Woods, he managed his plantation (known as Pomgrain (sp)) and conducted a store. He was appointed Magistrate and served as sheriff of the county in 1776-7. He was married, first, to Mary Mills (it is believed) and second to Susannah Anderson, daughter of Nelson Anderson.

Notes for MATTHEW RHODES:

According to the Edgar Woods book on the history of Albemarle County, Matthew Rodes/Rhodes was part of the Albemarle County Light Infantry unit, and also served as a county magistrate in 1816.

In a deed dated 1822, however, Matthew was deeply in debt, and under the insolvent debtors oath, he sold over 900 acres of land (most along the Moorman River) to the "Commonwealth." This, apparently, was prior to his execution! At this time, I do not know what crime Matthew committed, but the deed makes reference to the circuit court in Richmond, Virginia.

Generation No. 4

4. ROBERT P.5 RHODES/RODES (MATTHEW4 RHODES, DAVID3, JOHN2, CHARLES1) was born 1797 in Greene Co. VA (according to 1860 census), and died Bet. 1870 - 1878 in Nelson County, Virginia. He married MILDRED MARSHALL February 20, 1824 in Albemarle County, Virginia (Source: Albemarle County Marriage listings.), daughter of WILLIAM MARSHALL and SALLY RODES. She was born 1803 in Albemarle County, Virginia (according to 1860 Nelson Co. census), and died Bef. 1878.

Notes for ROBERT P. RHODES/RODES:

The Rhodes lived in Nelson County, Virginia, on the north side of the Rockfish River, and just east of the Rockfish Depot on Rt. 617. The Rhodes family appears in the 1850 and 1860 Nelson County census.

In a deed dated 1878, T.A. Rhodes Oliver, Eliza M. Rhodes and Mary M. Rhodes sold/gave 143 acres that had belonged to their father to their nephews James Thomas Anderson, Willard O. Anderson and Samuel M. Anderson.

According to census records, most of the children of Robert P. Rhodes and Mildred Marshall were born in Albemarle County, so I don't know if the Rhodes family moved to Nelson County just before 1850, or if the boundary lines of Nelson and Albemarle changed in this area.

On August 11, 2000, I visited the site of the former Rhodes homeplace. The house was destroyed by fire sometime after 1878 and before 1917. According to a local resident, "Miss Eliza" and "Miss Mary," daughter of Robert and Mildred Rodes/Rhodes, had gone to the Rockfish post office and store. Upon their return, a fire that had been on another ridge jumped the river and consumed the house.

While there is no inscription on stones in a small cemetery on the property, it is assumed that these are the graves of Robert Rhodes and his wife.

On the 1860 Nelson County Virginia census, Robert P. Rhodes listed his place of birth as Greene County, Virginia. He was born in 1797 and Greene County was not formed until 1838, meaning that he was born in the part of Albemarle which is now Greene. This is consistent with information regarding the site of the original Rhodes land, which was along the banks of the Moorman River.

Children of ROBERT RHODES/RODES and MILDRED MARSHALL are:

i. T. ANN6 RHODES, b: Abt. 1822, Albemarle County, Virginia; d: Aft. 1878; m. UNKNOWN OLIVER; d: Bef. 1878.

v. CORNELIA EDNA RHODES, b: September 20, 1834; d: January 14, 1904.

Notes for CORNELIA EDNA RHODES:

On the grave marker at Hilltop Cemetery, the stone for this woman reads "Edna." While I cannot be absolutely certain that "Edna" and "Cornelia E." Rhodes are one and the same, the information seems to fit from census records. In John W. Anderson's will which was written in 1899 and probated in 1902, he mentions Cornelia E. Rodes. Given that this woman died in 1904, that fits in as well.
