George W. Rhodes, Punxsutawney, was born in McCalmont township,
Pennsylvania, in 1843 and was a son of John and Anna (Bowers) Rhodes.
Anna was born in Virginia and her husband John was born in Union
county. They were married and settled in Jefferson county in 1841. They
had a family of eleven children, all of whom now reside in the county,
five sons and six daughters John was born in 1815 and died in 1886. He
settled with his parents, John and Mary (Moyer) Rhodes, in 1829. George
W. enlisted in 1861 in Company A, 105th Pennsylvania volunteers, and
served until June 5, 1865. He was taken prisoner but discharged on
order No.. 77, of War Department, was wounded the second time for which
he now receives a pension. He was married in 1868 to Elizabeth Hawk.
They have had a family of nine children, eight of whom are now living,
three girls and five boys. Mr. Rhodes has been supervisor for one term
and is now engaged in farming.
