U.S. geologist. Born 5 April 1916 in Clinton, Mo. Two sisters. Never married. Educated Humansville High School; University of Missouri (bachelor's degree with distinction, 193ft; master's degree, 1939). l*rofessional experience: Standard Oil Company of Texas (SGTEX), production department staff (1942-1946); exploration department staff (1946-1977). Died 26 June 1987 in Midland, Tex.

Mary Louise Rhodes was born in a small town in Missouri and was educated in a different small town. She attended the University of Missouri, where she received bachelors and masters degrees in geology. Her first professional job was with Standard Oil of Texas (SOTEX) in the production department. In this position, she examined well samples and constructed sample logs, prepared subsurface maps and cross sections and recommended well locations to production management. She transferred into the exploration department in 1946 and for the rest of her career worked in a variety of exploration assignments. Her outside interests included traveling throughout the world. She died of cancer in 1987.

Mary Rhodes was active in professional societies throughout her career. She was awarded honorary life memberships in the Permian Basin Section of SEPM (1974) and to the West Texas Geological Society (1978),

She became an excellent carbonate stratigrapher and was an expert on several of the Permian basin rock units. She and coworker John Emery Adams shared an interest in the Permian basin and were coauthors with others of two classic papers. c k
