Johann Peter Roehrig came to the U.S. back in the first half of the 1800s. He
settled in Cash Valley, just outside Cumberland, Maryland.
He and his father Johann Valentin Roehrig came to this country from an area
south of Fulda in Germany. Johann Peter came from Rueckers [ue = u umlaut, that
is two periods places horizontal atop the u)] and his wife Anna Margaret
Trueschler [ue = u umlaut] [not Kriegbaum] came from nearby Rommerz.
Rueckers is South. and Rommerz North of Flieden, which you will find on any good
map of Germany. Flieden is SSW of Fulda along Autobahn 66. All of these towns--
and many others mentioned in what follows -- are in Hesse, in an area once
called the Electorate of Hesse, not terribly far from the Hesse-Bavarian
border..
The family has generally been called Rahrig in the U.S., but in Germany it has
for centuries been spelled Roehrig [oe = o umlaut] . For authenticity's sake, I
will use Rahrig in whatever I say about the U.S., but Roehrig when speaking of
Germany
Johann Peter and his wife had eight children: Valentine, Julian Ann, Anna
Elizabeth, Mary Catherine E., Mary Ann, Anna Barbara, Elizabeth Sabrina, and
Margaret.
Anna Elizabeth married Urban Miller, and Anna Catherine E. married Frederick
William Hoffman.
Anna Elizabeth Rahrig Miller's seventh child was Mary Katherine Miller Burkey,
whose third child was Ambrose J. Burkey, whose third child was me, Fr. Blaine
Burkey.
Anna Catherine E. Rahrig Hoffman's oldest child was Maria Anna Hoffman
Detterman, whose third child was Mary Magdalen Detterman Rhodes, your mother.
So Mary Katherine Burkey and Mary Anna Detterman were first cousins. And Ambrose
Burkey and Mary Magdalen Rhodes were second cousins, and you and I are third
cousins.
