Executor to Earl of Rutland's will (his brother-in-law).
He built manors at Barlborough, Great Houghton and Hickleton with lands at Darfield, Little Houghton and Billingley, Yorkshire and Handley in Staveley as well.
Queen Elizabeth visited his manor several timesand sent him a bed for his new manor, which was evidently used as a model for the Earl of Shrewsbury's manor...
Judge Rodes described his manor at Barlborough: "Grand as it is, the idea is mine, and that of my architect, Thorpe. There are but five men who can erect these windows with their myriads of charmed shaped panes, and Huntingdon Smithson is the youngest, and has only enlagrged on our ideas. I am now anold man, but I can say I am the first gentleman who desired to have my house shaped in the form of an E, in honor of my queen. I may add it was also in honor of my neighbor of Hardwick, and we see here is her statue, and that of the venerable earl her husband." British Churchman Vol. III p.290
As Judge for Elizabeth, severely persecuted Catholics.
