!(Bloomfield Democrat, Thursday, 3 Jun 1875) "Another Hor r or - While our paper was on press last week, we were call ed to the side of an ol d resident of this county, Martin G ore, whose life was ebbing away from the ef fect of a crue l kick from a horse. - Mr. Gore was engaged in his business , stoc k breeding, at Barton's stable, at the time and rece ived his death blow b y a kick from one of the team belongi ng to Frank Guernsey. He was standing wit h his back to th e animal and never knew what gave him his death. The hoo f o f the animal struck him just at the base of the brain a nd broke in the skull . By the use of restoratives life ca me back to the apparently lifeless form , but no consciousn ess, and soon the life went out from the aged ten ement, an d the good old man was in the possession of that rest whic h was his he ritage by reason of the sixty years of uprigh t life that he had lived. His fam ily was summoned and too k the body home, from whence his funeral occurred on th e f ollowing day. He was buried in the Murphy graveyard near w here he had live d for twenty-six years. - Martin Gore wa s born in the State of Virginia 1814 . He went to Indiana w hen 18 years of age where he married; removing the nce to I owa in 1851. He came to Davis County, purchased the place w here his fami ly reside, and here built up for himself a co mpetency and a good name."

The tracts were sold in minimum of 80 acre units.

!Why was the transaction entered in 1833, yet Martin was s h own as an original landowner in Decatur County in 1835 ? Was the July 27, 183 5 date recorded in 1833? Could tha t represent when Martin attained majority ? Did William fi le for the land in order to acquire the 40 acres for Marti n ? Why? Hannah Shelton's 80 acres, purchased in May 183 3 joined the portio n acquired by William Swinney and Marti n.

Martin married Hannah Yates Shelton on 29 Oct 1834 in Decatur, IN. Hannah was born on 12 Jul 1811 in Rockingham, NC; died on 29 Aug 1892 in Davis, IA; was buried in Davis, IA, Sullivan Farm. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

!Hannah's will dated 18 Jun 1890, proved 19 Oct 1892 in Da v is County, IA (Copy obtained from State Archives, Des Moi nes, IA in May 1 994) left a total of 63 acres in two parce ls and all of Hannah's personal proper ty to daughter Mary . Remainder divided equally among all children.
