    !Ben was Davis County, Iowa's last surviving veteran of t h e Civil War. He enlisted in the Union Army on 12 Nov. 18 63 (Company E, Thir d Iowa Cavalry). He and four other Uni on soldiers guarded Jefferson Davis, th e President of th e Confederacy, after his capture. He was honorably dischar ge d at Atlanta, Georgia on 9 Aug. 1865.
