A SUDDEN CALL - ELIAS RHODES, AN OLD RESIDENT, FALLS DEAD IN CHURCH
At half past 8 o'clock Thursday evening, during prayer meeting service at the United Brethren Church at Eighth and Elk Streets, Elias Rhodes, an aged citizen and member of the church fell dead. The meeting was conducted by Rev. P. Surface, pastor of the church. The pastor called on Mr. Rhodes for prayer and Mr. Rhodes had just closed a fervent prayer. Then a hymn was sung, and a lady member was called upon for prayer.
During this prayer, the pastor informs the reporter, he noticed that Mr. Rhodes did not kneel, but sat in his seat which was in the second row from the pulpit, with his head resting upon his arm. During the progress of the prayer, the pastor noticed that Mr. Rhodes' gaze was fixed in the direction of the pulpit. When the prayer was done, the pastor went to Mr. Rhodes who was breathing heavily and showing signs of weakness. Another member came to his assistance, and when they raised the old gentleman's head he gasped once or twice and was dead.
The meeting was thrown into consternation at the sudden death of a member who had come there less than an hour before in apparent good health.
The family was at once notified and the remains were carried home. It is supposed that death was caused by heart disease, as Mr. Rhodes had been complaining for several days of pain in the region of the heart.
Mr. Rhodes was 73 years old and lived in Beatrice for about 28 years, coming from Ohio. He had been a member of the United Brethren Church for 40 years. He was well-known to all the old-time settlers of the county, and was highly respected as an exemplary man and citizen. He leaves a large family of grown sons and daughters, three of whom live in this city, one in Hebron, and one in Fairbury.
Funeral services were held at the United Brethren Church Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock.

Elias married Mary Edwards on 4 Jun 1837 in Fairfield, Ohio, USA. Mary was born on 4 Jul 1816 in Connecticut, USA; died on 19 Jul 1881 in Beatrice, Gage, Nebraska, USA; was buried in Beatrice Cemetery, Beatrice, Gage, Nebraska. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
