The Rhodes/Rhoads
Families Of The Area Of Huntertown Indiana
There are several
Rhodes
families living in this area in the early pioneer days, but have not been able
to connect them for sure into a family. Perhaps there is someone out there
who has researched this family and can help to put them together for us.
Here are some of the info on these early Rhodesmen. Sometimes
spelled “Rhoads”.
The History of
Spencerville tells of a “Mr. Sanders” who from his family record
says that there were 4 brothers who came to this area from Virginiaabout 1834-1835.
(Daniel’s daughter, Minerva, married a Sanders.)
Possible brothers
might be these early men:
William, who married
Betsey in 1839
John, 1796, who
married Hannah or Mary or both
Daniel, 1798, who
married Louisa and Mary
Jeremiah, 1807, who
married Ann Fleming
Jacob, 1817 who
married Sophia Blyler
Having found the ancestors of Jacob, it
appears that these are two different families though we find that many of the
first names are the same.
See Jacob and his ancestors and
descendants below:
WILLIAM
RHODES
William may have
owned land in Spencerville, IN.
He and Betsey were married in DeKalb Co., IN.
William ran a saloon
and at the time the WCTU was quite active and confronted him. He was
converted and quit the saloon business.

John apparently
started a hotel when he moved to Spencerville and called it the
“Exchange”. Then his brother, Jeremiah, took it over and changed
the name to “Pioneer Hotel”. “Grandma Rhodes” was
the cook in his hotel.

After a day visiting,
talks, and music, all present agreed that this reunion was a success and that
these reunions were something worth while and to boost for the next one and try
to make it better. Another reunion was
announced to take place on Sunday, August 31, 1930. The RHODES Family reunion
will be held at the home of FRANK LONGSWORTH, 6 miles south of Ari. (No other
information was given on this one) Jacob Rhodes had land
in Section 27, Township 33 North, Range 11 E. This is in Swan Twp in Noble
County, IN. Also in the same section we find land belonging to William Rhodes
and Daniel Rhodes, both probably the sons of Jacob. Jacob was still living at
the time of this plat map though Sophia would have died a few years earlier.
Jacob also has land in Section 33. May be the son, Jacob. They are smaller
sections of land. Jacob Rhodes

From the Avilla News,
July 1920: RHODESREUNION
The Seventh annual
reunion of the Rhodes family was
held in the LaOttoSchool house
Saturday, August 21st. A good crowd was present, although a number
were kept away because of threshing. 56 members registered. Mrs. Carrie
Dunten Mawe of Lincoln, Nebraska, being the guest of honor added greatly to the
pleasures with her cheerful manner and gave us a good talk.
All old officers were
re-elected to serve another year. FRANK RHODES, president; HENRY RHODES,
Vice-president; JOHN MENDENHALL, secretary and treasurer; MRS. GEORGE RHODES
and MABEL RICH were appointed as a committee on music for the next reunion.
It was decided to
hold the next reunion in the LaOttoSchool house the last
Saturday in August 1921. The usual annual feast was no small part, being
plenty of the best and to spare. Ice cream was served in the afternoon.
From the 1874 Swan
Township, Noble Co., IN map we find that Jacob Rhodes owns land west of what we
now call LaOtto. At that time it was called “Grand Rapids
Crossing” as the trains crossed at that point. This would be the same
railroad that traveled along on the south side of what we now know as 205.
Possibly the
following 1880 census may be the same Jacob, with a new wife:
