FIRST GENERATION

 

1.  Malachi Green Rhodes was born about 1811 in , , Georgia.  He died after 1880 in Talladega, , Alabama.  He was buried in Talladega, Family Cemetary, Alabama.  Census:  1850 US Census for Talladega County, Alabama indicates that he was a Carraige Maker. He was born in Georgia but all his children were orn in Al. Found on reel #15 Talladega District Sheet #395, Dwelling #639, Family # 655. Value of Real Estate was 1200. Wife was Mary Ad age 36; Son William age 17; Daughter, Sarah age 15; Son Thomas age 8; Son John Willis age 6; Son Malachi age 4; Daughter Mary A. age 2. This was Census enumerated on 30th of Oct.,1850.

Census: 1860 US Census for Talladega County, Al.on June 6, shows value of Real Estate at 1500, & Personal Property at 2500. Reel # 24, Sheet #637 pg. # 19.

This was found in the 1860 census index under "M G RHOADS". He is shown as a Carriage Maker. His son Thomas shown as a Blacksmith. His son Williaim J.(25) is shown on the same page as a family with wife Sarah age 26 and F. kating F (59).

Census: 1870 US Census for Shelby Co., Al., Sheet #531, Pg.# 29, roll # 39 on June 25th shows he was a Express Agent, Real Estate @@ 1300 & P.P.@@ 375. His age @@ 59 , Wife Mary @@ 56, Son Malachi (mis-spelled Malaki) @@ 22 a Express Messen- ger, Daughter Mary @@ 18, Son Harry @@ 17 a Apprentis to Machinest; and Daughter Rebecca @@ 14.

Buried in family cemetery with wife & some slaves in Talladega, Al. Per Mrs. Mary O.M. Parker-Daughter's article in 1955.

He was married to Mary Ann ARRINGTON (daughter of ARRINGTON and (Arrington)) about 1833.  Mary Ann ARRINGTON was born about 1814 in , , North Carolina.  She was buried in Talladega, Family Cemetary, Alabama.  Buried in family cemetery with husband & some slaves in Talladega, Al. Per Mrs. Mary O.M. Parker-Daughter's article in 1955.

2.  William J. Rhodes was born on 9 Nov 1832 in Mobile, , Alabama.  He was buried in 1898 in , Talledega, Alabama.  He died on 26 Aug 1898 in , Talledega, Alabama.  Census-1850, He was found in 1850 census reel #15 -Talladega Co.,Al.

Found Capt W.J. Rhodes wounded at Kinston and Bentonville with the 31st

Al. Infantry, in the Civil War. His regiment was organized at Talladega in

April of 1862. This was found on pg 239 of "Ancestor Trails to Georgia &

Al." by Dorman Laurez Mcdonald 929.20973 M .

HEGGIE) on 1 Nov 1866 in , Granville, North Carolina.  Mary Daniel Glover was born on 18 Apr 1839 in , Granville, North Carolina.  She died on 31 Oct 1914 in , Mecklenberg, Virginia.  She was buried in , Mecklenberg, Virginia.  Deed:  Clerk's Office of the Circuit Court of Mecklenberg County,

6.  Malachi Green Jr. Rhodes was born on 19 Jun 1846 in Columbiana, , Alabama.  He was buried in Apr 1899 in Five Mile, Presbyterian, Church Cemetery, Al.  He died on 23 Apr 1899 in Blossburg, , Alabama.  See notes on William

He was enlisted at 17 yrs old as a private of Co. a, Hardies Battalion,

Cavalry Reservers, Al. Confederate States Army, on 15 April, 1864. He was

paroled at Talladega on 05 June 1865. He graduated from College and traveled in

Europe. When he returned from Europe, he & brother William opened a General

Store in Talladega, Al. About 1880 he married Mary Garrett Garner, a widow with

one daughter Rebecca Jane. Circa 1887, he moved his family to Birmingham and

did carpenter work. In 1892, he moved to a farm in Tarrant City, Al. He moved to

Blossburg circa 1889 and died after being sick for one week. He is buried at

Five Mile Presbyterian Church & his grave is marked with a flat military marker

After his death, his wife and daughter Mary, moved with son Ross, to Texas.

Information compiled by Mrs. O.M. Parker, his daughter and was found in

surname clipping index of the Dept. of Archives & History, Montgomery, Al.

He is shown in the 1880 Talladega, Al. census pg 67 E.D.# 132, with his

parents as single.

 

He was married to Mary Garner GARRETT about 1878 in , , , Al.  Mary Garner GARRETT was born about 1850.  She married Malachi in 1878. She was a widow with daughter Rebecca Jane. Her

name was Mary Garrett Garner. She moved to Texas after Malichi died.  Malachi Green Jr. Rhodes and Mary Garner GARRETT had the following children:

           14                    ii.    Sanders Oscar Rhodes was born on 5 Mar 1884 in , , Alabama.  He died on 1 May 1887 in , , Alabama.

He was married to Elizabeth Candis Rogers (daughter of William Clinton Rogers and Rachel Stark (Rogers) Holeman) on 21 Sep 1892 in , Granville, North Carolina.  Elizabeth Candis Rogers was born on 17 Mar 1873 in , Person, North Carolina.  She died on 18 Sep 1953 in , Norfolk, Virginia.  Mark Alexander Rhodes and Elizabeth Candis Rogers had the following children:

13.  Charlie Ross Rhodes was born on 23 Jun 1880 in , , Alabama.  After his Dad died in 1899, He moved with his mom and sister Mary to

Texas. Charlie Ross was married to Dora Parker and eight children were

born.

 

 

 

17.  Mary_Ann Rhodes was born on 10 Jul 1893 in , , , Al..  Mary married Oscar Parker (Dora's nephew). Dora was Charlie Ross

Rhodes wife. She had four children, the first died at birth, but three, a

girl and two boys,. lived to raise their families.

19.  Mary Pearl Rhodes was born on 9 Aug 1895 in Oakhill Township, Granville, North Carolina.  She died on 26 Aug 1962 in Virginia Beach, , Virginia.  She was buried about 26 Aug 1962 in Virginia Beach, , Virginia.  Burial:  "Garden of the Masonic" section of the Princess Anne Memorial

He was married to Gertie May Briggs on 21 Nov 1924 in Norfolk, , Virginia.  John Frank Rhodes and Gertie May Briggs had the following children:

21.  Malachi Glover Clem_Oliver Rhodes "Dusty" was born on 8 Oct 1899 in Oakhill Township, Granville, North Carolina.  He died on 3 Sep 1975 in Norfolk, , Virginia.  He was buried on 5 Sep 1975 in Norfolk, , Virginia.  He use to work on the Engines of the Police and of the Boot Leggers,

usually giving the boot leggers a slight advantage.

 

Death:  He died of a massive heart attack

 

Name Change:  His name was changed at an early age to Clem Oliver

Rhodes.

 

Census:  The 1900 Census for Granville County, North Carolina mispelled

his name as M-a-l-s-h-i
