- 334. James9 Forbes; born circa 1635 in Scotland; married Katharen (_____) (see #335); died 27 Nov 1692 in Hartford, CT.
335. Katharen9 (_____); married James Forbes (see #334); died after Jan 1692/93.
The arrival date of James in New England is uncertain. The first record of him is contained in the medical journal of John Winthrop which states that James Forbes, a "Scotchman", worked on a farm in 1658 owned by Mr. Goodens. The possibility exists that he was one of the Scotch prisoners captured at the battle of Dunbar, Scotland, in 1650 and transported to New England to be sold as slaves, possibly aboard the "John and Sarah" which arrived in Boston by 13 May, 1652. The attitudes in New England at the time favored indentured servitude as opposed to slavery and the prisoners who were not sent on to Barbados generally served as indentured servants for terms up to eight years. Some say that he is the Captain James Forbes, of Culloden, Scotland, who m. Agnes Munro in 1643 and that Katharen was a 2nd wife. I am unaware of any substantiation to this claim.
Although there is no record of a marriage, the probate record lists his widow as Katharen. His estate was valued at ?344-11-05. The inventory of his estate included a dwelling house, homelot, barn, 60 acres of woodland, 6 acres of pastureland, 8 acres of swampland and 10 acres of meadowland.
Children of James9 Forbes and Katharen (_____) (see #335) all born in East Hartford, CT, were as follows:

167 ii. Dorothy Forbes.
iii. Mary Forbes; born before 1671; married Daniel Gaines.
iv. David Forbes; born 1671; married Sarah Andrews (widow of Henry Treat), daughter of Edward Andrews.
v. Sarah Forbes; born 15 Apr 1675; married, at age 20, Joseph Collier, son of Joseph Collier and Elizabeth Sanford, 15 Apr 1695 in Hartford, CT.
