- !CENSUS: 1850 US Census for Talladega County, Alabama indicates that
he was a Carraige Maker. He was born in Georgia but all his children were
born in Al. Found on reel #15 Talladega District Sheet #395, Dwelling
#639, Family # 655. Value of Real Estate was 1200. Wife was Mary Ad
age 36; Son William age 17; Daughter, Sarah age 15; Son Thomas age 8;
Son John Willis age 6; Son Malachi age 4; Daughter Mary A. age 2. This
was Census enumerated on 30th of Oct.,1850.
!CENSUS: 1860 US Census for Talladega County, Al.on June 6, shows value
of Real Estate at 1500, & Personal Property at 2500. Reel # 24, Sheet
#637 pg. # 19.
This was found in the 1860 census index under "M G RHOADS". He is
shown as a Carriage Maker. His son Thomas shown as a Blacksmith. His
son Williaim J.(25) is shown on the same page as a family with wife
Sarah age 26 and F. kating F (59).

Shows 3 males & 3 females in household located in Township 21, Range 1 West.
!CENSUS: 1870 US Census for Shelby Co., Al., Sheet #531, Pg.# 29, roll #
39 on June 25th shows he was a Express Agent, Real Estate @ 1300 &
P.P.@ 375. His age @ 59 , Wife Mary @ 56, Son Malachi (mis-spelled
Malaki) @ 22 a Express Messenger, Daughter Mary @ 18, Son Harry @ 17
a Apprentis to Machinest; and Daughter Rebecca @ 14.

!CENSUS: Found in 1880 Talladega Co. census #67 pg.1; s.d.2, e.d.# 132;line 1;
with son Malachi Jr.;Daughter Mary A. & wife Mary Ann listed as crippled. M.G.
Sr. is shown born in Ga.,
His Father is from Ga. & his Mother from S.C., His wife, Mary Ann's father
is listed being from Va. & her mother from N.C.

M.G. & Mary A.J. (Arrington) Rhodes were natives of Ga. & N.C., respectively.
Malachi was a carriage-maker by trade. He came to Al. & settled in Clark Co.
in 1831. Shortly thereafter he moved to Mobile Al., where he was in the
carriage business until 1836. I found in a Mobile, Al. 1833 city tax book where
M.G. owed tax of $2.80 on a house & 2 lots at Square # 181 sw corner St. Louis &
Lawrence streets. From Mobile he moved to Morgan Co., Al. He moved to
Talladega Al. in 1839. He camed into Talladega City in 1841, and was in the
carriage business until 1855, when he engaged with the Southern Express
Company, and remained with them until his death, which occured Sept. 30, 1884.
He reared five sons, four of whom were soldiers in the Confederate Army during
the late war. - end of article. Malachi is found in Capt. Hardie's Co.,
Talladega Militia Home Guard as private (age over 45) muster roll.
!I have copy of Family BIBLE pages. The orginal pages were torn out by Mrs.
Elsie G. Stokes, Rome, GA and given to Ann Nelson. Ann sent me a copy. Ann
Nelson address is 2525 Turtlemound Rd, Melbourn, FL 32934. When Mrs Stokes died
the Bible & other things were sent to Westville Museum, POB 1850,
Troutman Rd, Lumpkin, GA. 31815.
