Buried December 10, 1552, Castle Donington Church Cemetary
In the will of his father, John Roby, proven 5 May 1516, Thomas Roby, then over 14 years of age, is admitted as son and heir of John Robey, to a toft, a croft, and one yard of land, and a moiety of meadow at a rent of 20s per year.
In 1524, he took from the Lord a cottage with appurtenances situated in Donington, and paid 12d for a fine.
In 1526, his sister, Emmotte Roby, is admitted to a cottage to the use of her brother, Thomas, who in each of the years 1527-1532, 1535-1536, is on the homage, and in 1537 is fined for withdrawing toll from the King's Mill, and for breaking fold and taking out his sheep. In the same year, Thoams Roby, with other tenants and freeholders of the King's Lordship of Castle Donington and alsotenants of the King's Lordshiop of Melbourne, sued in Chancery as to the rights to common use over certain lands, the right of making Weirs over the Trent, and deerhunting and pannage for swine. (Cal. of Pleadings, Duchy ofLancaster, ii pg. 58).
In 1538-40 he is mentioned in other court proceedings.
On 5 Dec 1552, he is buried at Castle Donington. Elizabeth Roby, his widow was buried at Castle Donington on 22 Feb 1564/5.
A contemporary, perhaps a brother, John Roby, who (according to the Herald's Visitation of Notts., 1614) had a daughter, Margaret, married (at C.D. 12 Nov 1565) to Edmunde, son of Thomas Piggott, of Weston-on-Trent, Co. Notts, 1614., and had issue of Gervase Pigott who acquired lands in Thrumpton, Co. Notts., 1614 by letters patent, (2 Jac. 24 March 1604/5).
Gervase died 23 Oct 1617 having married for his second wife, Jane, daughter of John Bradshaw, of Burton-on-Trent who died on 4 Feb 1611/12
Daughter Elizabeth Piggott born about 1609, died 20 Mar 1634/5. No trace elsewhere of this John Roby. Possibly it is a mistake for Thomas, who was both son and father of a John Roby. (See Fletcher's Pedigrees p. 171; Thoroton's History of Nottingham, p. 14).
