  At an early age, John's brother, Henry, slammed a door on his right foot, causing a severe injury. Due to the lack of medical attention, this became a permanent deformity. Because of this deformity, Dave Craig was opposed to his daughter, Tally, marrying John; he feared John could not provide an adequate living for his family. However, the couple was determined, and, since they were both of legal age they eloped. The couple did prosper, owning a large farm. Ironically, Dave Craig came to live with John and Tally later in life.
