(from an article on Lenox Raines, from Joyce Mertens) "He supported his growing family by farming and for several years (starting in 1919) served as mail carrier from Higby to Countsville and later from Fletcher to Harmony. As mail carrier, he rode horseback 313 days a year, 24 miles per day round trip for $1.29 a day; rain, sleet or high water. If he was ill, one of the sons would carry the mail. He was under bid in 1936 for $1.19 a day."
