- Preston died of cholera aboard the James J. Lucas steambo a t in 1853, enroute to St. Joseph, Missouri and was burie d i n the Mississippi River. Charles, Rebecca & Emeline di ed o f cholera in Kansas. Samuel & wife Mary returned to W est V irginia with surviving children William & Eliza in 18 57. T hey then returned to Kansas in 1858, then moved to S t. Jose ph, Missouri.

Samuel Harrison Swinney, Great Grandfather, married Mary E l izabeth Cummings. Samuel Harrison Swinney, was born in Mo nr oe County, West Virginia, near a small town, called Pete rst own, at the foot of Peters Mountain. Mary Elizabeth Cum ming s, Swinney, was born in Monore County, West Virginia . The c hildren of Samuel and Mary were by name:
Preston Swinney Charles Delaney Swinney William Christia n S winney Rebecca Swinney Emeline Swinney and Eliza Jane S winn ey.
Great Grandfather Samuel Harrison Swinney, had a six hundr e d and forty one acre farm in West Virginia. Buying up fo u r farms, each having a house. "The Mahou House." "The Har ne y House." "The Hopkins House." and "The Rankton House. " The re was a maple sugar grove on one of the farms an d a sprin g on the "Harney" farm, called the Harney Spring.
When the Samuel Swinney family was returning to Saint Jose p h, Missouri in 1853, on the Steamboat, "James J. Lucas" , th e boat became stranded on a sandbar, in the Mississipp i Riv er. After all the fuel and everything else availabl e had be en burned up, the Captain ordered the "barrels o f bacon" t o be brought out and the sides of bacon were thr own on th e fire to get up enough steam to move the steambo at. The Ca ptain said, "We will move her off this bar or bl ow her plu m to hell". They moved her.
Preston Swinney died of cholora [sic s/be cholera], on t h e Steamboat, "James J. Lucas", enroute to Saint Joseph Mi ss ouri. They buried Preston Swinney in the Mississippi Riv e r in 1853. The rest of the family settled near Independen c e Creek, Johnathan, Kansas in 1855.
Rebecca, Emeline and Charles Delaney Swinney, died of chol o ra [choleral in Kansas in 1856.
Samuel and wife Mary, returned to West Virginia taking t h e two surviving children, William Christian Swinney and E li za Jane Swinney, in 1857. The family then returned to Ka nsa s in 1858. They moved from Kansas to Missouri, in 1859 . The y settled south of Saint Joseph, Missouri, in the vic init y of Iatan and Halls Station.
William Christian Swinney was born August 13th 1847. [a ] H e died July 6th 1924 at Huntington Beach, California. W illi am Christian Swinney married Sarah Addie Dunlap in 187 1. Th ey had six [seven] children, by name:

Maude (Myrtle) Lee Swinney, born June 25th 1873. Married G e orge Ward McAfee in 1909. No Children. George Ward McAfe e , died in 1933, at Glendale California. He was the Capta i n of a life saving crew at Neah Bay Washington for sever a l years.
George Washington Swinney, born May 3rd 1876. Died whe n a s mall child.
Mary (May) Parthena Swinney, born July 21st 1879. Marrie d C harles Centenial Overbury. They had one Daughter, Edri s Ove rbury, born January 4th 1900. Died April 15th 1900. C harle s Centenial Overbury died at Glendale California yea r of ?
Adelea Swinney, was born April 29th 1883. Died the same ye a r. She was a twin sister to Addie Swinney.
Addie Swinney was born April 29th 1883. Addie, married Ea r l Cummings. They had three children. Two daughters, and o n e son. Addie Swinney Cummings died in 1910, on a farm thr e e miles south of Maysville, Missouri. The children by na m e were:

The y returned to KS in 1858, then moved to MO in 1859 . They s ettled south of St. Joseph in the vicinity of Iat an and Halls Station.
