  Arthur Junior Rhodes Born 29 Oct. 1929 iin Manhattan, Riley, KS. Dad went to high school at both Manhattan, KS, and Wichita East where he graduated in May 1947. He was on the gymnastics team and earned a letter in that sport. After attending the University of Wichita for 2 years, Dad enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1950 and served until 1954. He had originally been signed up for flight training in San Antonio, TX but had to drop out due to problems with his eye sight. He then went on to be a radar tech and was stationed at a radar station in Ferry County, Washington. Dad once told me that it was there that he met Vance Van Woert at a Masonic meeting and was invited to Vance's home for dinner where he met Vance's pretty, blonde daughter, Peggy Ann Van Woert. Dan and Mom were married on 10 June, 1955 in republic, Ferry Washington. They moved back to Kansas where Dad went to Kansas State University on the GI bill studying and graduating with a degree in Civil Engineering. After graduation, Dad took a job surveying in Springfield, MO, and went on to become employeed by the State of Missouri in the Bridge Division in Jefferson City from where he retired. When he was a young man, Dad had been a Boy Scout and had achieved the rank of Life. So when I became old enough to join the Boy Scouts, Dad was excited and decided to become a volunteer. At the time, we were attending 1st United Methodist Church in Jefferson City and therefore I joined Troop 1. All this was about the same time that my parents were building a new home at 2509 Orchard Lane on the west end of town. Since there was a new Methodist Church out that way, the family started to attend Wesley United Methodist Church. Wesley was so small that it didn't have a Boy Scout troop so Dad decided to create one. After getting all the necessary paperwork turned in, he became the first Scout Master for troop 111 and I became one of the charter members. From that moment on, Dad never ceased to be a vital member of the local Boy Scouts until Altzheimers forced to him quit. Dad was also active in his church as well as the local Masonic Lodge where we was both a Mason, a Knight Templar, and a Shriner. At one point, Dad had served as the Grand Master of the Missouri Lodge. When the local Shriners decided to drive tiny red motorcycles in parades, Dad went out and got one of those. But it was the unicycle that I remember most, and Dad wasn't afraid to ride that thing in the parades. He took all his Masonry related functions quite seriously and he wasn't too happy when I informed him that I didn't want a membership in Masons for my graduation present. I'm not sure he ever got over that. Anyone aquainted with Dad more than 15 minutes knew of his love for K-State football, and many got to see him in his purple K-State blazer. He didn't care what you thought of the Wildcats, you were going to hear his opinion of them regardless of your collegiate loyalties. I'm sure the Mizzou graduates at work were sorry when Bill Snyder elevated the K-State game out of the depths of the abyss and made them a worthy foe. And he loved humor. I'm sure he got that from his mother, Elma Brubaker Rhodes. One of his old time favorites was Red Skelton whom he watched on TV faithfully every week. And of course he liked John Wayne, Henry Fonda, Jimmy Stewart, and others. I think it was every Sunday evening we'd watch with Dad the Ed Sullivan Show as well...except one night. It was the night that the Beatles were on TV for the first time in the U.S. on Ed Sullivan and Dad couldn't stand to watch so he changed the channel to something else. Dad loved TV. It didn't matter if it was a good movie or the nightly news; although he didn't have much use for sitcoms, except the Honeymooners. It drove many of us mad to know that if we were going to "borrow" one of Dad's movies from his extensive collection, we'd have to "check it out" of his library. He didn't have a problem reminding someone that the movie they "borrowed" was past due. If you were a visitor to his house on Boonville Rd., be prepared to hear his story of how he bought that house in a blind bid. He was quite proud of his home on the river. It's so sad to see how the house has fallen into a state of disrepair. Soon it will only be worth the land it's sitting on. He'd not be happy if he saw it now. And Dad loved his clothes. Some thought his taste in ties a bit out there, but not Dad. He had quite the collection. give him the time and he'd show you how to properly tie a Windsor knot. Owls. You've probably never seen as many owls in one location as you did when you went into his house. Of course, that's because he was a graduate of Woodbadge where he had been in the owl patrol. And he was proud of it. I remember Dad and his best friend in Scouting, Paul White, going back and forth as to which was better, the Owls or whatever patrol Paul was, I think Eagles. Did you know Dad could yo-yo? Yep. He was good at it too, especially if he practised for 10 or 15 minutes. He could do all sorts of tricks. I remember him talking about how he and his younger brother, Bob, would get their yo-yos and go at it. That must have been a sight. Don't even suggest there's another brand of yo-yo than Duncan. Most of my memories with Dad have something to do with Boy Scouts, which is rather sad. Looking back, I wished we'd spent more time as a family. Boy Scouting was good for me, but I'm not sure it was good for our family...in fact I'm sure it was detrimental. But that's another story altogether. Some of our family vacations were planned around Scouting. For example, the year we went to Idaho for the Jamboree and Mom and Michelle drove to Washington to see Grandpa and Grandma Van Woert while we were in Idaho.
