411 | Andrew H. Hamon - one of the farming residents in Washington District, Jackson County, WV, was born in Russell County Virginia, August 22, 1834. He was the son of John and Margaret (Keiser) Hamon, and his father died in Jackson County, while his mother makes her home here. Paulina, daughter of Joseph and Sarah (Starcher) Rhodes, who live in Roane County, this State, became the wife of Andrew H. Hamon. Their Children are twelve: Virginia M., Elizabeth, Margaret, Joseph P., David L., John D. Martha, Leah, Rachel, Nancy Luverne, Cynthia and Joshua. Mr. Hamon had one brother who was a soldier in the war between the States, and his grandfather, John Hamon, was a captain in the War of 1812. Andrew H. Hamon is an industrious farmer, who is making the best use of his means to give his children the advantage fo such an Education as was denied to him in an earlier generation. He receives his mail at the post office at New Kentuck, Jackson Co., West Virginia. 412 | Austin Rhodes fought in Company H, 22nd North Carolina Regiment, Scales Brigade, A.P. Hill's Corp, Pender's Division. Both Austin and James were taken prisoner a few days before the end of the conflict outside of Petersburg, Virginia, at Hatcher's Run. >From there they were taken as prisoners to New York Harbor. Each had to sign an oath of allegiance to the United States before they were released. _________ Austin C. Rhodes was born in the year 1836 in Rockingham County to James Henry Rhodes and Sarah (Sally) Smith Rhodes. His brothers and sisters were Elizabeth (Betty) 1841, Hardin 1842, Letitia (Lettie) 1844, James H. 1846, Rufus 1851, and Sarah, 1854. He married Elizabeth Terry on December 29, 1853. They had two sons, James Powell Rhodes and Dick Rhodes. They were farmers in Stokes County. Austin enlisted in Company H, 22nd Regiment, North Carolina Troop on March 1, 1862. He was wounded at Frayser's Farm, Virginia on or about June 30, 1862. He was reported absent/wounded through October 1862. He returned on an unspecified date and was wounded again, in the shoulder, at or near Wilderness, Virginia in May 1864. He was captured at Hatcher's Run, Virginia on April 2, 1863 and confined at Hart's Island, New York Harbor until he was released on June 19, 1863 after taking the Oath of Allegiance. While Austin was away, Sarah (Sally) passed away. On August 28, 1866 he married Matilda Frances Spencer. They had ten children. Herbert, who married Cora Bell Corns, Bud, Zeb, Drew, Sis (who married Bob Hawkins), Ila, Hester, Lula (who married Will Jessup), Minnie (who married Jonah Bullins), Bob (who married Zeporia Sheppard), Charles (who died at 16 years), and Verta (who married Walter Collins). Austin died in 1920. James Powell Rhodes married Letitia Shelton. They had three sons, William Wesley, John R., and Luther E. Rhodes. William Wesley married Jennie Lula Gray. John R. married Bitt Jones and Luther was married to Eliza Lawson. William Wesley and Jennie Gray Rhodes were the parents of William Hollis Rhodes who married Ellen Lackey, Posie E. Rhodes who married Avaline Honaker, Paul who died in infancy, Gabe who also died in infancy, Josie Marie Rhodes who married Manie Odell Stevens and Nina Virginia Rhodes who married Leonard Blair. 431 | Casto, Louella Adaline Wendell Funeral services for Mrs. Louella Adaline Casto, 72, wife of M. L. Casto of Ripley, were held from the EUB church here Tuesday afternoon with Rev. Roy W. Fisher officiating and the burial was in the Fairplain Cemetery. Mrs. Casto died at her home here Saturday night following a long illness. Her condition had been critical for several days. Mrs. Casto was born at Staats Mills on December 17, 1876, a daughter of the late George N. and Hanna Staats Wendell. Survivors include the husband, M. L. Casto; one son, Russell Casto of Parkersburg; three daughters, Mrs. Audell Williams and Mrs. Helen Hunter, both of Ripley, and Mrs. Gladys Maxwell of Charleston; two brothers, Virgil Wendell of Dover, Ohio and Curtis Wendell of Wheeling; a sister, Mrs. Ida Karr of Clendenin; a half-brother, Raymond Wendell of Akron, Ohio; five half-sisters, Mrs. Edith Marvin, Mrs. Florence Bellchambers, Ethel, Edna and Louise Wendell, all of Akron; a step-mother, Mrs. Etta Wendell, also of Akron, and six grandchildren. July 7, 1859 son of the late John A. and Lucinda Parson Rhodes He was united in marriage in 1885 to Sarah Elizabeth Watson. She died in 1921. To this union were born 2 daughters Mrs. Gertrude McCuteleon and Mrs Nellie Stephens both of Parkers burg. He also leaves a foster son Sherman Hardman of near Jewett, Ohio. Mr. and Mrs. Rhodes made their home on Middle Reedy near Green Valley for many years engaged in farming. In 1923 he married Mrs. Mary Straley McMillion who survives. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 5 great grand children 67 step children and one sister Mrs. Carrie Leary of Pasadena Cal. He was of a family of 14 children. His twin brother died about 20 years ago in Oklahoma. His older brother James died in New Mexico. A sister, Mrs. Dorcas Williams died at Spencer about 8 years ago. Another sister, Mrs. Margaret Goff died in Akron about four years ago. Five brother died in their childrhood ? in the same year of typoid fever and three sister Amma, Martha and Louise died in yourng woman hood "His memory will linger long with his children and friends. "Those who knew him best feel that he is ow in the presence of his God, his Christ and his friends who have out stripped him in the race and gone? Funeral services were conducted in the Reedy Methodist Church, Sunday by Rev. Romie L. Phillips of Parkersburg, whose funeral text was "And there shall be no more sea" May Beautiful floral tributes were offered. A special song "Gathering Flowers for the Master's Bouquet" was sung by Frank Riddle and his son and two daughters. And the song "Good Morning Up There" was sung by the church choir.
