1843 !During the Civil War Delaney enlisted and served as a Pri v ate in Co. K, 46th Iowa Infantry. Delaney's 13 year ol d son, John Wesley Swee ney, accompanied Delaney and playe d the fife for the Regiment. Delaney cont racted spinal fe ver while in the service and "was hauled home in a wagon an d co nfined to bed for five months." He was never a well m an after that and die d when only 53, leaving five minor ch ildren. The Oak Grove Cemetery is abo ut 4 miles east of E lgin, KS. Delaney was listed in the 1870 Cherokee Count y , KS and the 1880 Chautauqua County (Belleville Twp.), K S censuses. This fam ily is included in the "History of Ch autauqua County, KS. !Immediately after their marriage, they left on the long w a gon trip to Iowa with other Swinney and Webb relatives . They first lived ne xt door to his father, William, in P rairie Twp., Davis County, Iowa near h is father-in-law Jos eph Webb. The families all lived close by on each sid e o f the county line. After his discharge from service he bega n to look toward Ka nsas as having more opportunities for h is family. On 7 Jan 1865 he sold his la nd in Iowa. The f ollowing year the family was living in Pleasant View Twp . , Cherokee County, Kansas. In 1871 the family was on th e move again and settl ed in Belleville Twp., Chautauqua Co unty, Kansas. Here they found an area t hat suited their n eeds with timber, running streams and plentiful game. Th e y built a log cabin on the creek in an area just south o f the Frank Rutledge fa rm.
