Wife Sarah C. Age 26. & a F. kating age 59 .
Found Capt W.J. Rhodes wounded at Kinston and Bentonville with the 31st
Al. Infantry, in the Civil War. His regiment was organized at Talladega in
April of 1862. This was found on pg 239 of "Ancestor Trails to Georgia &
Al." by Dorman Laurez Mcdonald 929.20973 M .

Shown with wife, Sarah Ann McClane; mother-in-law, E.J. McClane-age
76 & Charles McClane, brother-in-law; William is shown as a merchant
and employee's are shown on this census.
Wm J. Rhodes, Merchant, was born in Mobile Al. Nov. 9, 1832, and was reared &
educated at Talladega Al. He learned the carriage-maker's trade, & was in that
business at the outbreak of the war. In April, 1862, he joined Co. G, 31st
Al.,orginally known as "Alabama Rifles" was made orderly sergeant, was later
Captain of his Co. & remained in service until the close of the
war. He was at the battle of Chattanooga & the siege of Vicksburg; at Kingston,
N.C., and in General Smith's Kentucky campaign. He was promoted to first
lieuentenant, & was a captain at the close of the war. He surrended at
Salisbury, N.C. He returned to Talladega, and from there to Calhoun Co.,where
he farmed for four years. In 1872 he again came to Talladega, & engaged in the
mercantile business with much sucess. He was appointed Tax Collector in 1876
for one year. He married March 22, 1855, to Sarah A. McLean, daughter of
William McLean,Esq. one of the early settlers of Talladega. He was twice
mayor of Talladega and a Mason.

Executed by Miss Willie McLane, List heirs as Miss Mary A. Rhodes, Mrs. Fannie
Valentine, Harry Rhodes, all living in Rome, GA, John W.Rhodes in NC,M.G.Rhodes
Jr Birmingham, Thomas Rhodes, Montgomery, all of whom are his brothers &
sisters, he had no direct decendants as his wife died 2 days after him.
His parents were Malachi Green & Mary Ann J. (Arrington) Rhodes and were
natives of Ga. & N.C., respectively.

he was a Carraige Maker. He was born in Georgia but all his children were
born in Al. Found on reel #15 Talladega District Sheet #395, Dwelling
#639, Family # 655. Value of Real Estate was 1200. Wife was Mary Ad
age 36; Son William age 17; Daughter, Sarah age 15; Son Thomas age 8;
Son John Willis age 6; Son Malachi age 4; Daughter Mary A. age 2. This
was Census enumerated on 30th of Oct.,1850.
!CENSUS: 1860 US Census for Talladega County, Al.on June 6, shows value
of Real Estate at 1500, & Personal Property at 2500. Reel # 24, Sheet
#637 pg. # 19.
This was found in the 1860 census index under "M G RHOADS". He is
shown as a Carriage Maker. His son Thomas shown as a Blacksmith. His
son Williaim J.(25) is shown on the same page as a family with wife
Sarah age 26 and F. kating F (59).

Shows 3 males & 3 females in household located in Township 21, Range 1 West.

39 on June 25th shows he was a Express Agent, Real Estate @ 1300 &
P.P.@ 375. His age @ 59 , Wife Mary @ 56, Son Malachi (mis-spelled
Malaki) @ 22 a Express Messenger, Daughter Mary @ 18, Son Harry @ 17
a Apprentis to Machinest; and Daughter Rebecca @ 14.

Sr. is shown born in Ga.,
His Father is from Ga. & his Mother from S.C., His wife, Mary Ann's father
is listed being from Va. & her mother from N.C.

M.G. & Mary A.J. (Arrington) Rhodes were natives of Ga. & N.C., respectively.
Malachi was a carriage-maker by trade. He came to Al. & settled in Clark Co.
in 1831. Shortly thereafter he moved to Mobile Al., where he was in the
carriage business until 1836. I found in a Mobile, Al. 1833 city tax book where
M.G. owed tax of $2.80 on a house & 2 lots at Square # 181 sw corner St. Louis &
Lawrence streets. From Mobile he moved to Morgan Co., Al. He moved to
Talladega Al. in 1839. He camed into Talladega City in 1841, and was in the
carriage business until 1855, when he engaged with the Southern Express
Company, and remained with them until his death, which occured Sept. 30, 1884.
He reared five sons, four of whom were soldiers in the Confederate Army during
the late war. - end of article. Malachi is found in Capt. Hardie's Co.,
Talladega Militia Home Guard as private (age over 45) muster roll.
!I have copy of Family BIBLE pages. The orginal pages were torn out by Mrs.
Elsie G. Stokes, Rome, GA and given to Ann Nelson. Ann sent me a copy. Ann
Nelson address is 2525 Turtlemound Rd, Melbourn, FL 32934. When Mrs Stokes died
the Bible & other things were sent to Westville Museum, POB 1850,
Troutman Rd, Lumpkin, GA. 31815.

Gore, above, route 1, Nortonville , will celebrate thei r 60th wedding anniversary Sunday wit h a family dinner at their home. The y were married Dec. 2 0, 1891, at the home of her parents in Platte County, M O . -- Mrs. Gore had no difficulty getting accustomed to h er married name follow ing the wedding because her parent s were Mr. and Mrs. Henry A. Gore. The y lived two miles e ast of the old Sugar Lake station. -- 'My wife and I ar e abou t third or fourth cousins,' Mr. Gore explained. 'M y father and her father we re second cousins.' -- He was b orn in Platte county March 17, 1871, and she w as born Oct . 7, the same year. His parents were John and Rachel Gore . -- Mr . Gore explained that he lived for a time near Pe rry. After his father's death i n 1875, his family moved b ack to Platte county. -- Mr. and Mrs. Gore began hou sekeep ing on a farm south of Sugar Creek church in Buchanan count y. From ther e they moved to Platte county where they rema ined until 1909, when they mov ed to Woodward county, Okla . -- xxx -- The family moved from Oklahom a to the Free land neighborhood about three and one-half miles west of th eir p resent farm. In 1914 they moved to Whiting where the y remained on farms fo r 22 years. They left Whiting and m oved to a farm near Lancaster where the y remained eight ye ars before they moved to their present home seven years ago . - - Their son, James Henry, operates the farm, and thei r daughters, Mary Elizabe th and Lula Mae Gore remain at ho me. They have two other sons, Fred of near Mus cotah, an d Raymond, north of Holton, three grandchildren and two gre at grandchi ldren. -- xxx -- He recalls he helped to hau l rock for the foundation and he lped build the Short Cree k Baptist church. Both retain their membership there . - - Their anniversary is doubly important because it also i s the birt hday of their son, Fred. -- xxx -- When he wa s a young man, Mr. Gore haule d many loads of wood to Atchi son from Missouri and some of the trips were made o n extr a cold days. -- xxx."
