| 1209 | !"Funeral services for the late Roy Sears were held this a f ternoon from the Johnson Chapel at 2 o'clock, Rev. Jame s Miller, pastor of t he First Christian Church officiating . Interment occured in the city cemetery . - Roy Sears, a ged 33, shot himself to death on Monday at his home i n E l Dorado, Kansas, worry over business conditions is bel ieved to have caused M r. Sears to take his life. - Mr. Se ars went to his store early Monday morning . He returned h ome shortly before 11 o'clock and told Mrs. Sears that he w as n ot feeling well. He asked her to go to the store afte r some money and then purc hase some medicine for him. Mr . Sears did this, despite the fact that he ha d over $200.0 0 in change in his pocket at the time. - When Mrs. Sear s retur ned from the store, she found the lifeless body o f her husband lying on the flo or. The shotgun was restin g between his legs. The body was on its back. Lif e had b een extinct only a few minutes. Mrs. Sears ran to a neighb oring apartm ent and told the occupants what had happened . The officers were then notifi ed. - Chester Turber acti ng coroner, investigated the shooting. - The d eceased wa s born in Osage county in 1892, and was the son of the lat e Z. T. an d Mrs. Sears. He was educated in the schools o f Chautauqua, Kansas and came her e with his parents whe n a young man. He has been engaged in business for th e la st 13 years. He was in the grocery business and for a numb er of months in t he partnership of Hubbard and Sears, late r going into business for himself, a nd later moving to Kan sas and engaging in the same business. - The decease d i s survived by his widow and a daughter Louise, aged 11, hi s mother, Mrs. Z. | 1221 | !"Oscar Sears was shot to death Saturday morning by Chest e r Graham. - Sears and Graham lived in the same localit y on Mission Creek. Th ey had been having considerable tro uble during the summer over damage done t o crops by thei r stock. Graham's stock as is the story now had bothered S ea rs in his crop and Sears' stock had also damaged Graham' s growing crop. Feeli ng between the two was at such a pit ch that each had closed the road across hi s place agains t the other. Saturday Sears had started to Caney, Kansas a nd wa s denied the privilege of driving across Graham's pla ce. A wordy battl e ensued during which time several rock s had been cast. Sears returned to arm hi mself. While h e was gone Graham procured a shotgun. Sears returned wit h his wi fe in the wagon. The quarrel was resumed with th e result as above stated . - Word was sent to Sheriff Frea s, reaching here about noon. The Sheriff wen t out by wa y of Bartlesville but Graham had started for this city to g ive h imself up. He came in Sunday morning in company wit h his brother and surrender ed to Deputy Cooksey. He is i n jail awaiting preliminary trial which ha s been set for S aturday morning. - The corpse has been sent here an d i s being held for burial. We checked the Charity Cemeter y in the ol d Bradfield area, and the IOOF Cemetery in Mari onville for graves of Thomas a nd Sarah without finding the m. The son, Rufus, and family is buried in Mari onville IO OF, as is Colmore L. Newman, who I believe is probably a br other of T homas; and Colmore's son Thomas. The present da y owner of the land is Leaford G old, whose wife Lucille i s a "half-niece" of Nellie Newman, daughter of Ruf us. | 1229 | !(Bloomfield Democrat, Thursday, 3 Jun 1875) "Another Hor r or - While our paper was on press last week, we were call ed to the side of an ol d resident of this county, Martin G ore, whose life was ebbing away from the ef fect of a crue l kick from a horse. - Mr. Gore was engaged in his business , stoc k breeding, at Barton's stable, at the time and rece ived his death blow b y a kick from one of the team belongi ng to Frank Guernsey. He was standing wit h his back to th e animal and never knew what gave him his death. The hoo f o f the animal struck him just at the base of the brain a nd broke in the skull . By the use of restoratives life ca me back to the apparently lifeless form , but no consciousn ess, and soon the life went out from the aged ten ement, an d the good old man was in the possession of that rest whic h was his he ritage by reason of the sixty years of uprigh t life that he had lived. His fam ily was summoned and too k the body home, from whence his funeral occurred on th e f ollowing day. He was buried in the Murphy graveyard near w here he had live d for twenty-six years. - Martin Gore wa s born in the State of Virginia 1814 . He went to Indiana w hen 18 years of age where he married; removing the nce to I owa in 1851. H e is the son of John Fly, a farme r of that state. Willia m acquired an education in the common schools of hi s nativ e state. In the year 1852 he went to California to seek hi s fortune i n the gold mines, and there labored for five ye ars, accumulating some wealth. H e then returned to Missou ri, but remained only a short time during which he ma rrie d Miss Gore, the daughter of James Gore, a farmer in Andre w County, Missouri . Their union was blessed with the birt h of three boys. Cary B. born in Kans as, 14 Dec 1858; Joh n Davis born in Andrews County, Missouri 12 Oct 1860; Ja me s M. born in Missouri 21 April 1863. The first year of hi s marriage h e moved to Kansas and improved a farm, upon wh ich he lived three years. Becomin g wearied with farm lif e he sold his home and went to Colorado and followed th e v ocation of a miner. In 1865 he returned to Missouri, and w hile on the r oad, at Plum Creek, his wife died, in June 18 65. Mr. Fly came to Montana in 18 66 first locating in Dee r Lodge County and engaging in mining, which he followe d f or four years. In 1870 he directed his attention to stoc k raising, and chos e the Gallatin Valley for his range. O n the 23rd of May 1872 he married Susan C . Brooks of Dee r Lodge City. In 1882 he bought the Central Park propert y co nsisting of a large hotel, toll bridge and 160 acres o f land. He is now the pr oprietor of the hotel, and also f ollows farming and stock raising.
