1 | Charleston Daily Mail Tues. Evening June 19, 1956 Pg. 1 AUTO KILLS SLIP HILL MAN Sister Of Victim Dies Uninformed John Franklin Rhodes, 87, of Slip Hill, on the Sissonville Road, was fatally injured yesterday when struck by an automobile while walking along U. S. 21 near his home. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Staats Hospital. His sister, Mrs. Martha Alice (Lula) Haynes, 70, of Slip Hill, who had been critically ill in a Charleston Hospital for three months, died last night without learning of the death of her brother. She, like her brother, was native of Jackson County. She had lived in Kanawha County 40 years. She was a member of Greenlee Chapel Methodist Church. Dr. Goff P. Lilly, county coroner, said Rhodes suffered fractures of the skull, neck, spine and both legs. The car driver was identified by Trooper J. C. Boland as Edsel Blizzard, 19, of 1204 West Ave. He said the accident occurred when Blizzard swerved to avoid an automobile stopped in the highway in front of him. He was not charged. It was the 16th highway fatality of the year in Kanawha County. Rhodes was a retired farmer. He had lived the greater portion of his life in Kanawha County. Surviving Mrs. Haynes are four sons, Russell of Slip Hill, Leslie of Tyler Mountain, Benny of Kanawha Two-Mile and Allen of Chillicothe, 0.; five daughters, Mrs. Virgie Wandling of Slip Hill, Mrs. See AUTO VICTIM, Page 11 AUTO VICTIM Continued from Page One Nellie Wheeler and Mrs. Glenda Nottingham of Kanawha Two-Mile, Mrs. Goldie Holmes of Parkersburg and Mrs. Norma Marcum of Weirton; two brothers, Edward Rhodes of Kentuck and Charles Rhodes of Slip Hill; 23 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. There is no record of the child, nor of the father. The chid was buried near Annie's father, Haywood, in the Fugate Cemetery in Rye Cove. 11 | In the 1870 Scott County, Virginia Census, Taylor Township, a Haywood Rodes, age 18, farm laborer, from Virginia, is listed among the household of Rufus Fugate. I am certain that this is James Haywood Rhodes, son of Joseph and Catherine. By 1870, he must have been working the Fugate farm as either a field hand or tenant farmer. Either way, the relationship between the Rufus Fugate family and the Haywood Rhodes family was strong. When Haywood Rhodes died, he was buried in the Fugate Cemetery on their farm in Rye Cove. His grave is not far from Rufus' grave. The other names listed in the Fugate household in the 1870 Census include: Rufus B. Fugate, 42, farming; Sarah, 28, keeping household; James, 17, farm laborer; Susan, 73 (can't read occupation); and Elizabeth Hoof, 20, domestic servant. In the 1900 Scott County, Virginia Census, Powell District, Haywood and family are listed and summarized as follows: H. Rhodes, head, Mar 1852, age 48, from North Carolina; Sallie, wife, Jan 1864, age 46, from Virginia; Emmett, son, Oct 1878, age 21, Virginia; Mattie, daughter, Apr 1882, age 18, from Virginia; James H., son, Aug 1884, age 15, from Virginia; Bertie, daughter, Mar 1889, age 11, from Virginia; Annie, daughter, Aug 1896, age 4, from Virginia. | Rhodes, James Haywood Sr. (I00223)

30 | James was one of the first three constables in Rockingham County, North Carolina. James was also a constable in Fairfax County, Virgina in the years 1769 and 1771. In 1759, John Rhodes (James' father) was Constable and Undersheriff in Fairfax County. There is a marriage record from Montgomery County, Maryland that shows a James Rhodes marrying Mary Garrett (also spelled Garrott). Both James and Sanford lived/owned land on or near Fisher or Fishing Creek in Rockingham County, which would put them on the Mayo River in the Price/Stoneville area of the county. James Rhodes had only one son, according to the 1790 and 1800 census records of the same county. The year the son disappears is the first year that Sanford appears for the first time as head of his own household. | Rhodes, James (I01656)

She was united in marriage to Abraham LITTON, July 3, 1864, and to this union 13 children were born, of whom 9 survive her: William and B. F. LITTON, of Gay, Mrs. Everette PHILLIPS of Reedy, Roane County, Mrs. B. F. COX of Hereford, Mrs. James E. EVANS of Thirteen, Mrs. P. C. GREENLEAF, Irving, Clinton and Levi LITTON, of Charleston. Aunt Louisa was converted early in life and joined the M. P. Church. Some time after the death of her husband she united with the U. B.Church at Gay. Her highest aspirations were to walk in the paths of truth and right as were evidenced by her many friends who had learned of her Christian influence and good deeds. After funeral services conducted by Rev. PAYNE of Spencer, the body was quietly laid to rest beside her husband in the family cemetery. The deceased leaves 9 children, 2 sisters and a host of friends to mourn the loss of a loved one. (Mountaineer, Friday, January 12, 1923) | Horner, Louisa Virginia (I389)
