for this reason he used the scutt spelling. the geo scott was not in the civil war.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  GEORGE SCUTT was born on 12 Dec 1813 in ISLE LA MOTE, VERMONT; died on 12 Feb 1839 in ISLE LA MOTE, VERMONT.

    Notes:

MEHITABLE WAS PROBABLY MARRIED BEFORE AS GEO. W. SCUTT HAD A 1/2 BROTHER
    JOHN SMITH

FAMILY TRADITION: GEO W. SCUTT WAS A SMALL BOY WHEN HIS FATHER DIED
GEO SR. DIED 12 FEB 1839, GEO W. BORN 21 MAR 1830 WOULD HAVE BEEN 8
    YEARS OLD

family tradition george scott died after eating a piece of apple pie at church gathering, fowle play was considered.

see notes for his wife Mehitable

George was 16 yrs old when he married Mehetable and she was 29 since his son george is known to have had a 1/2 brother last name smith, mehetable must have been married before.
There seems to be good grounds for a detective story here. Mehetable had a baby girl Emillie born 1838 last name Stoughton?? George supposed to have been poisend and died feb 1839, then in 1850 she married Declancy Stoughton , had another child left it with Declancy within a few months????

GEORGE married MEHITABLE STOUGHTON about 1829 in vermont. MEHITABLE was born about 1800 in Alburgh, VERMONT. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 5.  MEHITABLE STOUGHTON was born about 1800 in Alburgh, VERMONT.

    Notes:

we know that her son george had 1/2 brother named john smith.

Alburgh vital records, DeClancy Stoughton married 2nd ,15 jan 1850 Mrs Mehitable Scutt.
the census record 1850 Alburgh, taken aug-sep 1850 list the following
    # 365 DeClancy Stoughton age 66 born mass farmer
Delancy Stoughton Jr. age 41 born vt, sailor
Gustavus C. Stoughton age 31 born vt. Farmer
    Helen M. Stoughton 1 mo.Vt.

    # 369Mehitable Stoughton age 50 born vt.
Emiline Stoughton age 12 born vt.
George Scutt age 20 born vt. sailor
    Reynolds Scutt age 16 Sailor

the later marriage to DeClancey is strange in deed i had not listed it before but since Diane Lee Struyk posted it on Roots Message board i feel it should be included George Scutt my ancestor married mehitable about 1829 we do not know her maiden name but some were along the line george scutt picked up a half brother john smith so maybe she was a smith.and had john out of wed lock or previous marriage
with george she had george scutt bn 21 mar 1830 alburgh vt. she also had Reynold bn 1834.and emiline born 1838 but listed as stoughton.
one of the many stories related by Berlin Olyer was that of George Scutt consumed to much poisen laced apple pie and died 12 feb 1839.

    1850 Census
living with mehitable age 50 was son george Scutt age 20 a sailor, son Reynold Scutt age 16 sailor,
and a daughter Emiline stoughton age 12 bn vt.why is she not living with her father ? could make a mystery of this, could her birth be related to georges pre mature death

with all of this it would appear her maiden name is probable smith she was about 29 yrs old when she married george scutt who was 17.

she is listed as mehetible scutt when she married declancey--it would appear her name was somthing other than stoughton when she married geo. scutt. The marriage is not found yet but it must have been recorded somewere as she is called Scutt when she married Declancey

Isaac Rhoads property is listed above and settlement made Sept 1864 would assume Isaac died sometime before this date. he was living apart from Eleanor according to her correspondence about 1840

    .

Isaac married Elenor Twigg on 31 Mar 1814 in SNAITH, , YORKSHIRE, ENGLAND. Elenor (daughter of JOSEPH TWIGG and ELIZABETH WARD) was born in Sep 1795 in Drax,Yorkshire,England; was christened on 13 Sep 1795 in SNAITH, , YORKSHIRE, ENGLAND; died in in Platsburgh,New York, usa. Notes:

    lived at scruff hall,drax,yorkshire,england

This Scurff Hall is located on the ruins of Roman Villa recently excuvated 80 ft by 27ft nearly everything found was left with he twigg family.
Among there family records is a charter granting some land a chapel of st. Wildrid, which stood near the roman villa to the drax priory in norman times.
Ellenor's family lived on the property from 1760.
by charter king edward granted the land & howden (across the river)to Quer (his foster mother)the farm then became Quer Scarth (being a pass or way in)and currupted to Scurff hall.

Eleanor was married in Drax had at least one child baptised in england came to amarica with her husband Isaac Rhoades 30 Sep 1820 on the ship Athens, of New york.

she brought a trunk full of beautiful gowns a mystery for a while until we learned her father was a cloth merchant. in hull, yorkshire, England

Eleanor and her husband bought land in plattsburgh area there goal were to farm the land but the soil was unfit for anything. from letters in possesion of robert lord, it would appear her uncle Joseph Twigg was helping her ,apparently her husband drank a lot and neglected the farm and family. her in laws the Rhodes tried to get her to return to england, even offering passage, but she stayed which must have been difficult she was brought up in a well established english family, well educated, living in a very hostile enviroment in the forest of northern new york.

1850 census listed head of household clinton co. Saranac

in joseph Twigg letter 13 jun 1846 refers to sorry condition she Eleanor is now living in alone none of her daughters make room for her at there firesides for the winter.in England however poor aged parents are they are attended too.
