    Notes:

!(Bloomfield Democrat, Thursday, 3 Jun 1875) "Another Hor r or - While our paper was on press last week, we were call ed to the side of an ol d resident of this county, Martin G ore, whose life was ebbing away from the ef fect of a crue l kick from a horse. - Mr. Gore was engaged in his business , stoc k breeding, at Barton's stable, at the time and rece ived his death blow b y a kick from one of the team belongi ng to Frank Guernsey. He was standing wit h his back to th e animal and never knew what gave him his death. The hoo f o f the animal struck him just at the base of the brain a nd broke in the skull . By the use of restoratives life ca me back to the apparently lifeless form , but no consciousn ess, and soon the life went out from the aged ten ement, an d the good old man was in the possession of that rest whic h was his he ritage by reason of the sixty years of uprigh t life that he had lived. His fam ily was summoned and too k the body home, from whence his funeral occurred on th e f ollowing day. He was buried in the Murphy graveyard near w here he had live d for twenty-six years. - Martin Gore wa s born in the State of Virginia 1814 . He went to Indiana w hen 18 years of age where he married; removing the nce to I owa in 1851. He came to Davis County, purchased the place w here his fami ly reside, and here built up for himself a co mpetency and a good name."

!Martin and Hannah are listed as original Decatur County , I ndiana landowners. Martin on 27 July 1835; Hannah on 2 7 May 1833.

    !From (Indiana State Archives; Microfilm A17; Book 4; p. 3 0 9); original Tract Book entry for Indianapolis Land Offic e records on line 2 ; "W1/2 NE (Sec.) 28 80 (acres) S Mar 2 1, '33 William Swinney N July 27, '35 M artin Gore" Fro m (Decatur County, IN; Original Landowners Tract Book, Tran sc ribed from Indianapolis Land Office Records; p. 142) "T ownship No. 1 0 N Range 8 E; Section 28; (2nd line) NW1/4 o f NE1/4, 40.00 acres, July 27 , 1835, Martin Gore; (3rd lin e) SW1/4 of NE1/4, 40.00 acres, Mar. 21, 1833, Will iam Swi nney." The tracts were sold in minimum of 80 acre units.

!Why was the transaction entered in 1833, yet Martin was s h own as an original landowner in Decatur County in 1835 ? Was the July 27, 183 5 date recorded in 1833? Could tha t represent when Martin attained majority ? Did William fi le for the land in order to acquire the 40 acres for Marti n ? Why? Hannah Shelton's 80 acres, purchased in May 183 3 joined the portio n acquired by William Swinney and Marti n.

Martin married Hannah Yates Shelton on 29 Oct 1834 in Decatur, IN. Hannah was born on 12 Jul 1811 in Rockingham, NC; died on 29 Aug 1892 in Davis, IA; was buried in Davis, IA, Sullivan Farm. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Generation: 3

  1. 6.  James Semore Swinney was born about 1750 in Ireland [County Cork] (son of Moses Sweney and Ann (Seymour) Semore); died on 28 Aug 1836 in Monroe Co, VA.

Emma Swinney Walker relates that three Swinney brothers ca m e from County Cork, Ireland, and settled on the Susquehan n a River in Pennsylvania. One brother may have returne d t o Ireland. The brother Moses settled in Monroe County , VA . Emma covers James Swinney and Susanna Hammock and l ist s eleven children.

The Swinney & Dunlap Family History by Lee Ora May Swinne y , as given to her by two widow aunts. The aunts are: Ma r y (May) Parthena Swinney Overbury, and Maude (Myrtle) Le e S winney McAfee.

According to Myrtle & May Swinney,as told to them by the i r grandfather, William Christian Swinney, and William bei n g the son of Samuel Harrison Swinney, claimed that Jame s Se more Swinney was from Cork County, Ireland. This fac t is t o be researched.

James Semore Swinney was born sometime between 1750 and 17 6 0 based on his reported age in the 1830 Monroe County, V A c ensus, as age between 70 and 80. This from James L. Go re i n 1999.

*The Sir name was always spelled Swinney, with the Swinney / Price descendants and they did not know James Swinney's m id dle name.

    The following data was supplied, 10 August 1996, by Jame s L . Gore to Carol & Jerry Nelson, 5440 Horse Ridge Way, B onit a, CA 91902, phone #619 479-6242; e-mail address: jdn 3434@ aol.com

Quote: James was one of the first settlers of the New Riv e r country. On 19 Mar 1796 a James Swinney was on the ta x l ist for Greenbrier County, VA.

James was a soldier in the "Indian Wars" in Caperton's Com p any. Fought the indians in Kanawha Valley, VA and was pr ob ably with Gen. Lewis at the battle of Point Pleasant.

James' Will probated Sep. 1836 in Monroe County, VA.

James Semore Swinney Sr.'s wife is given as Susan Hammoc k i n "Swinney Family" by Emma Swinney Walker.

In a "corrective" statement written by James L. Gore , i n a letter dated 18 Feb. 1999, claims he was misquote d an d did not give his permission to William Sanders who w rot e in his Vol 1 book, A New River Heritage, the Indian d at a listed in the next few paragraphs. In Vol. !!! Sander s m ade a retraction of his statements. Per James Gore, th es e were Notes only, and were only working notes. Two of J ame s and Susanna's daughters married into the Gore family . Pe r James L. Gore in a letter dated 20 July 1994; attac hmen t dated 13 November 1981 up-dated: "The first eight ch ildr en were by ____Hammock and the latter three children w ere b y Susanna_____. Susanna's maiden name is unknown whe n sh e married James in 1793, she was Lilly."

As one reads further, some of the above confusion on wiv e s clears. Daughter Anna Swinney born 1779 at Pittsylvani a , VA., married James William Wiley (See Wiley Family Gro u p Sheets). According to James Wiley: He married Annie Sw ee ney whose mother was an Indian named Wenomah. Per Jame s L . Gore letter of 18 Feb 1999, his research does not ind icat e any Indian heritage . James L. Gore's "History of th e Wil ey Family" by Sanders in NRH, Vol 3, page 212, quotes : Jam es Wiley Sr. born 1777 at what is now Shawnee Lake , WV; die d 2/28/1857 in Mercer County. James married 179 9 in Monro e Co., VA., to Anna Sweeney Born 1775 at what i s now Shawne e Lake, WV; died 18 Oct 1863 at Shawnee Lake , WV. Anna Swi nney is the daughter of James Sweeney and h is Shawnee wife , Wimona.

*The name Wenomah will be spelled various ways throughou t t he Swinney data.

Jacklyn Gay Price McLaughlin was told by her father that t h ere was Indian blood in the Swinney background. Gay's si st ers and brothers were also told that their grandparent s wer e half breed indians, and first cousins. We have no t prove n this.

James L. Gore who supplied the Shawnee Indian wife, feel s t hat the first eight children are from the Indian wife , as S usanna Hammock lived to be 104, so one would believ e she wo uld be the second wife. Further research must b e done on b oth wives. The Lilly sir name may be a mix up ? There ar e many Gore/Lilly marriages, plus Pennington/L illy marriage s mixed into the Swinney family.

Regarding the brothers of James Semore Swinney Sr. Much r e search needs to be done. We know James had a brother Mos e s (per Emma Swinney Walker).

The Will of Moses Sweney dated 30 Apr 1784 at Pittsylvan i a Co., VA; Abstract of Wills 1768-1800, Book 975.5665 H87 4 , page 99: Names, James Semore Sweney and other childre n no t named, to receive Moveables equally divided. With t he he lp of this Will, we discovered the father of James Sw inne y and that James was named James Semore Swinney.

Emma Swinney Walker's statement that one of the three brot h ers arriving in America from County Cork, Ireland, was na me d Moses. This Moses would be the son of Moses Sweney an d An n Semore/Seymour.

Further, Jacklyn Gay Price/Swinney (McLaughlin) receiv e d a Revolutionary War Declaration for pension for a Jose p h Swinney from Haskell D. Shumate, Star Route 4, Box 30C , U nion, West VA. 24983. This letter was mailed July 26 , 1985 . Gay along with her sisters' Lynne and Delpha, me t Haskel l Shumate while in Union, West Virginia the earl y part of J uly 1985.

It is possible that Joseph Swinney may be another son of M o ses Sweney and Ann Semore/Seymour.

The Swinney/Gore data sent by James L. Gore has many Shuma t e familes married with Swinneys, as well as Gore.

Haskell Shumate feels Joseph Swinney is connected with Jam e s Semore Swinney Sr., as he applied for his pension at Un io n, West Virginia, and was living near James. Joseph Swi nne y stated his age about 82 years in the Application date d 18 26. That would make Joseph Swinney born around 1744 an d wo uld be about James Swinney's age. Also, James Swinne y stat ed in Joseph Swinney's Application for Pension tha t he is t he half brother of Joseph Swinney.

*Virginia B. Sweeny, P. O. Box 483, Osterville, MA 02655 s e nt a letter to Gay, dated 15 April 1989. In her letter s h e stated she corresponded with Nona J. Armstrong of Sant a B arbara, CA., and that Norma's great great grandfathe r is S amuel Neil Sweeny. Samuel was on the 1790 U. S. Cens us, Mil ton, PA.

What is facinating, this Sweeny family has almost the iden t ical story as Emma Swinney Walker, but with different des ce ndants:

"There were three brothers who came from Ireland to Pennsy l vania in the 1700's...Samuel Sweeny was in Milton, Northu mb erland County,PA., on the Susquehanna River in 1795. I t i s thought that one of his brothers, Alexander Sweeny we nt t o the southern colonies."

James married Susanna (Susan) Hammock in 1773. Susanna (daughter of Richard Hammock and Mary ? [Hammock]) was born in 1756 in Pittsylvania, VA; died in 1850-1860. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 7.  Susanna (Susan) Hammock was born in 1756 in Pittsylvania, VA (daughter of Richard Hammock and Mary ? [Hammock]); died in 1850-1860.

    Notes:

Lowell Goar shows James Swinney's wife as Winnoa____.

James Wiley, who married Annie Swinney, claims that the mo t her of Annie was an Indian named Wenomah, in 1795.

Source on above: A New River Heritage, Vol, I; William Sa n ders, 1991, p. 120.

Per James L. Gore, Susanna died between 1850 and 1860.

1850 Census, Monroe Co., West Virginia, dated the 13th o f S eptember lists the following household; Dwelling 371, p ag e 80:

  1. 12.  Moses Sweney was born in 1713-1725 in Ireland; died in 1785 in Pittsylvania County, VA.

    Notes:

    Pittsylvania County, VA; Abstract of Wills 1768-1800, Bo o k 975.5665 H 8 74, page 99.

The following Will dated Apr. 30, 1784 - Sweney, Moses, N a mes: Son: James Semore Sweney - my land - only his moth e r is to have her thirds till her decease. Except by he r co nsent the land should be sold. Then she is to have th e thi rd of the price. Wife: Ann Swinney - all my persona l estat e. At decease of wife all moveables to be equall y divide d between my children and Josiah Mapples (I do no t know wh o he is.) Estate not to be appraised. Executor : Ann Swin ey, sole and whole executrix.

The children of Moses Sweney was provided by Jerry D. Nels o n and James L. Gore of Lake Park, GA., in March 1999.

Daughter Ruthea was provided by both Gore, as well as Bill i e Floyd BFLOY@ aol.com on the net. Billie is a descenda n t of Josiah Maples. Josiah Maples was listed in the Mos e s Sweney "Will". Josiah Maples married Ruthea Sweney/Swe en ey, believed in McMinn Co., TN.

Moses Sweney/Sweeney may have another son, Joseph Sweene y , according to the Gore family. Gay McLaughlin also beli ev es so. Gay has an" Application for Pension" for a Josep h Sw inney who served in the Rev. War. Joseph enlisted i n 177 5 or 1776 at Pittsylvania County, VA. Joseph Swinne y was b orn in 1744.

Moses Sweeney and family lived in Pittsylvania County, V A , during this period, and James Semore Swinney vouched f o r Joseph Swinney when Joseph applied for his pension. Ja me s Swinney declared that he is Joseph Swinney's half brot her.

Billie Floyd believes she saw another wife for Moses Sween e y in a DAR record. This is to be researched. Moses Swen e y may have been married twice.

Following is general information, connection unknown?

"Excerpt from data compiled and written by Emma Swinney Wa l ker, Blakesburg, Iowa, 1928-29.

The first Maryland census was published in 1790 by the U . S . Government, and enumerates the names of all members o f fa milies, including Redemptioners, and gives a count o f appro ximately 40,000 Irish.

Many of these Irish crossed the Channel and voyaged from E n glish ports, where they were compelled to take new name s so metimes voluntarily, and sometimes involuntarily, fo r the p urpose of concealment, either by transforming thei r origina l names into English, or by adopting similar ones . Most o f these names were retained on this side the Atla ntic, so a s not to arouse the prejudice of their English n eighbors.

In complying with the statue just quoted, some Irish famil i es accepted the doubtful privilege of translating their n am es into their English equivalents. Also, some Irish imm igr ants, whose family names were not changed in Ireland, t hei r descendants appear in a much disguised form in the Co loni al records.

Through mistakes of clerks of courts, ministers, registrar s , etc., letters have been dropped or inserted, and many n am es have been written down phonetically. In the mutilati on s of time, even these became further changed, so that af te r the lapse of time of a few generations, the Irish them sel ves, deliberately changed their names, as prefixes Mc , Mac , O', etc., were in many families dropped, and so Bry ans we re perhaps once O'Bryan or O'Brien, McLaughlins ar e sometim es Laughlins or Lofflins, and O'Sullivans or Sull ivans spel led backward as Navillus, and McSwiney, MacSween ey, Swine y and Sweeney may or may not have once been the f amily we n ow spell Swinney.

In 1638 to 1675, several Sweeneys, so early records show , h elped blaze the trail to civilization on Long Island . In t he Indian army, we find a Brigadier General Alexand er Joh n Henry Swiney a son of a Major General G. Swiney . (In ano ther list is found a Richard Charles Garton a me mber of th e firm of Garton, Sons and Company.)

Among Revolutionary War records are the names of Lieut. Ja m es Sweeney; later a John Henry Sweeney; a Thomas Sweeney , a nd another James Sweeney of Buck Co., Pennsylvania. So me o f these dates are from 1801 to 1905. We have locate d Swinn eys in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania; Dallas, Texas; Stor y Co., I owa; Illinois; Oklahoma; Virginia, and various poi nts in Mi ssouri, yet we cannot trace a relationship with a ll, and so me through correspondence, have proven to be o f entirely di fferent families unless we are of the same fa milies in Irel and.

So if these are of our own flesh and blood, it is not ea s y to decide nor claim, so we are going to leap the spac e o f many miles and eventful years, to places and people o f wh om we know to be important and dear to us, and to who m we k now we are indebted for our existence.

In the early or middle of the eighteenth century three Swi n ney brothers came from County Cork, Ireland, and settle d o n the Susquehanna River in Pennsylvania. About 1800, o ne b rother, whose name is forgotten, being dissatisfied he re, r eturned to his native land. The brother, Moses, sett led i n Lowden Co., Virginia, and the other brother, James , Sr. , settled in Monroe County, Virginia. Moses Swinney' s peop le are thought to be scattered through several state s, an d several before mentioned are thought to be descenda nts fr om this branch, and it is a disappointment not be ab le to f ind a connecting link thus far. end of excerpt
