Boaz, Ala, Aug. 20 ,1949- A woman who's
seen history made in the South, will celebrate her 97th birthday Monday.
She is Mrs. Flora Caroline Pruett, born in Fayette County, Ga. Her mother
died when Flora was 8, as the War Between the States began, her father, Samuel
Rhodes, joined the Confederate Forces, fought under Gen. Joseph E. Johnston in
Virginia.
While her father was in the war, Flora,
her two brothers and two sisters were sent to Calhoun County in Alabama to stay
at their grandfather's home. Flora's grandfather had 21 of his children and
grandchildren staying with him during the first year of the war. The remaining
war years saw 19 living with him. The women would spin and weave cloth and
the few men and boys left on the place would work in the fields.
Today, Mrs. Pruett recalls that every
member of that large household had a specific job to do. She was still too young
to do any weaving, but helped her aunt with work in the kitchen.
In 1871, Flora married Joseph J. Pruett who lived near Heflin. They had 13
children, seven still living.
****
Altogether Mrs. Pruett heads five generations - seven children, 40
grandchildren, 85 great-grandchildren and 26 great-great-grandchildren. Mr.
Pruett died 32 years ago on Christmas Day. The Pruetts moved to sand Mountain
65 years ago and in 1915 Mrs. Pruett came to Boaz.
She has a remarkable memory, recalls
not only incidents of her younger days, but is also interested in current
events.
Mrs. Pruett now lives with her daughter here, miss Maude Pruett, on College
Street.
