According to the 1850 Elizabeth Twp, Lawrence Co., OH census, John W. Rhodes was born in PA.  In this census, the name was spelled as Rhoades for John, but the children's name was spelled as Rhodes, which is the present spelling of John's descendants.

John W. Rhodes married a woman named Mary Guston or Gaston in May 1832.  This information was recorded in the family Bible. Mary's maiden name was not very legible, but is strongly believed that Gaston is the corretc.  From this union, 8 known children were born.

In 1835 James Luther Rhodes was born being the second child.  According to his Civil War Service Record, he was born in Jackson Co., OH.  From the Company descriptive book, he was aged 27, 6'1/4 tall, dark complexion with dark hair and gray eyes.  James died during his service in the Civil War in 1864 and is buried in the National Cemetery in Winchester, VA.

After the Civil War, John W. Rhodes and his family migrated to MO and were living in Memphis, Scotland Co., MO in July of 1870.  This is when James's two orphaned sons William Winfield & James Walter Rhodes were picked up from an OH orphanage by an uncle and taken to live with their grandparents.

By 1887, the family had migrated to KS and John is listed in the Third Annual Directory of the City of Wichita.  He was living at 2212 West First Street.

John W. Rhodes died in 1890 in Wichita, Sedgwick Co., KS.
