Dear mother and brothers, i writ to let you know that i am in good health thanks be god for it at this present, hoping this lines will find you all in health, remember me to all my friends not forgetting cuzzen Elizabeth barbe, remember my love to her, (i dont expect that i shawl writ ane more), and to let you now that we are not been in know battle yet but wey expect it every day and night, wey are on a iland about fifteen miles long & two miles wid and the innamy is all round the iland. we have know way of get off. we must fite our way off. our men is a fiting every day and night, the other night a battle the other night at kings bridge 3 miles. New Yourk iland were the town is on the iland. i am in grat hopes that i shawl see you all again but wee expect a battle ever day and night, i am grat hope that the town will be burnt in a few days, the english wod have burnt it before this time but they want the town for barracks, but if they dont burn the town wee shawll burn the town ourselves, none more at present but your dutyfull son,
