  • Notes
    • MAGGIE AS WE KNEW HER WAS NO DOUBT THE STRONGEST PERSON I EVER KNEW.
WHEN ONLY 8 YEARS OLD HER MOTHER GAVE HER TO THE BRONSON FAMILY IN BELLVILLE CANADA THAT SHE MIGHT HAVE A BETTER OPERTUNITY AT THIS TIME HER FATHER WAS AWAY FROM HOME. WHILE WITH THE BRONSONS SHE LEARNED TO READ HER ONLY PRINTED BOOK WAS THE BIBLE. THE BRONSON HOME STANDS JUST OPPOSIT OF THE CHAMPLAIN BRIDGE A SMALL LOG CABIN STILL STANDING BEHIND THE NEW HOME ALONG THE HIGHWAY.

IN 1895 SHE JOINED HER MOTHER TO GO TO MALONE, N.Y. WERE THEY WERE JOINED BY HER FATHER WE KNEW HIM AS JIM CUMMINGS, HOWEVER HE WAS BORN MOSES GENEROUX THEY THEN WENT TO SPRING COVE NEAR TUPPER LAKE N.Y. AT WHICH TIME SHE WORKED WITH HER MOTHER FOR THE COOPER LUMBER CO CAMP # 5. THIS IS WERE SHE MET BERLIN OLYER.
IN 1913 THEY MOVED TO LITTLE FALLS AND ALMOST IMMEDIATLY TO NELLISTON, N.Y. ABOUT 1915 SHE RAN A NEEDLE IN HER HAND IT BECAME INFECTED SHE WAS TAKEN TO ALBANY MEDICAL CENTER WERE THEY WANTED TO REMOVE THE HAND. A YOUNG DOCTOR WANTED TO EXPERIMENT--REMOVED ALL FLESH FROM BACK OF HAND CUT A POCKET IN HER THIY SLIPPED THE HAND IN. THE FIRST SKIN GRAFT IN THE HOSPITAL THOSE WHO REMEMBER HER WILL RECALL SHE ALWAYS TRIED TO HIDE THE HAND SINCE THERE WAS A VERY HIGH MOUND ON THE BACK.
iN th late 1920'S BERLIN OWNED A FOUR DOOR OPEN BUICK THEY WERE ON THERE WAY HOME FROM CHERRY VALLEY WITH THE CAR FULL OF APPLES, ON THE OLD ROAD TO SHARON SPRINGS, HE LOST CONTROL OF THE CAR
IT WENT OVER THE BANK DOWN A MILE AND A HALF HILL CUTTING OF TREES AND BRUSH ON THE WAY. SHE WAS SO SCARED SHE BIT OF HER WHOLE UPPER LIP BEING ATTCHED ONLY AT THE EDGES, AGAIN IF YOU RECALL SHE OFTEN TRIED TO HIDE IT. SOME TIME IN THE FORTIES SHE HAD ONE KIDNEY REMOVED, LATED A GAL BLADDER.
SHE DISAPPEARD IN 1964 AGE 85 SINCE HER HUSBAND WORKED FOR THE RAIL ROAD SHE HAD A LIFE TIME PASS. SHE LEFT OUR HOUSE IN NELLISTON TO GO TO LITTLE FALLS INSTEAD SHE WENT TO MARTINTOWN CANADA. SHE FINALLY CALLED AND HER SON VERN WENT AND GOT HER. SHORTLY AFTER THIS SHE FELL AND BROKE A HIP.FROM WHICH SHE RECOVERED.
DURING ALL THIS TIME SHE GAVE BIRTH TO 10 CHILDREN 3 OF WHICH DIED YOUNG.
EVERY FRIDAY SHE SPENT ALL DAY GETTING READY FOR THE WEEKEND BAKEING AND
PREPARING FOR HER HUSBAND AND THE 20-30 PEOPLE THAT WOULD COME FOR SUNDAY.

NO ONE IN THE FAMILY KNEW ABOUT JIM CUMMINGS CHANGING HIS NAME.
SHE KNEW IWOULD FIND OUT I AM SURE THAT IS WHY SHE WENT TO MARTIN TOWN.

ONE OF HER HUSBANDS MANY STORIES WAS HOW HERE FATHER HAD KILLED A MAN IN A BAR ROOM FIGHT (THERE WAS A FIGHT A MAN DID DIE )
MOSES GENEROUX WAS IN A BAR IN MARTINTOWN FALL OF 1890 WITH A ANN MACARTHY A VERY ATTRACTIVE RED HEAD GIRL A COLORED MAN INSULTED HER A FIGHT STARTED MOSES SHOT HIM IN THE LEG, RESULTING IN HIS DEATH. THE TOWNS PEOPLE TARED AND FETHERED MOSES AND ANN MACARTHY AND CARRIED THEM THRU MARTINTOWN ON A RAIL DEPOSITING THEM ON THE OUTSKIRTS. AN ELDERLY MAN NAMED ALEX KING AGE 95 IN 1969 WHO I MET THRU THE PROVINTUAL POLICE DEPT RELATED THE STORY TO ME.A COPY OF THE PROV POLICE DET LETTER FOLLOWS ALONG WITH A COPY OF MARRIAGE RECORD. MOSES //THEN WENT TO MICHIGAN CHANGED HIS NAME TO JIM CUMMINGS LIVED THERE UNTIL SPRING 1896, WHILE THE ST LAWRENCE RIVERE WAS STILL FROZEN HE RETURNED TO SPRING COVE N. Y. WERE HE JOINED HIS WIFE AND GATHERED THE FAMILY TOGETHER. THE FAMILY CONTINUED TO BE KNOW AS CUMMINGS

I RECALL THAT MAGGIE HAD THE ENITIALS M G WITH A CROSS OVER A R ON HER UPPER LEFT ARM JUST ABOVE THE ELBOW. I HAD ASKED HER ABOUT IT AND SHE TOLD ME A BOY IN SCHOOL HAD DONE IT WITH A PIN AND INK.. IF SO IT HAD TO BE BEFORE 1890 SHE WOULD HAVE BEEN 11 YEARS OLD AND THIS HAD TO BE BEFORE HER FATHER LEFT HOME AND CHANGED HIS NAME. SHE ALWAYS CLAIMED THE BOY MADE A" G" INSTEAD OF " C" ???

MAGGIE, WAS OF CANADIAN BIRTH AND NEVER BECAME A AMERICAN CITIZEN,SHE WAS VERY LOYAL TO THE CROWN, VISITING CANADA TO SEE THE QUEEN WHEN SHE CAME THERE.

BOTH SHE AND HER HUSBAND BERLIN CLAIMED TO BE OF INDIAN DECENT IF SO IN HER CASE IT MUST HAVE BEEN N THE LAVALLE LINE
