When but four year s old his mother die d, and he was placed in the care of his grandmother, who ke p t him until he was twelve years old. He then came to Mon tana and lived with h is father. He was educated in the pu blic schools of Gallatin County and at th e age of eightee n began to work for himself, buying cattle with his wages . I n 1882 he bought from his father, William Fly, 160 acr es of farming land lyi ng on the east Gallatin.
