- Nell Rhodes was born, with her twin brother Albert, on May 2, 1883 in Reading MI. She moved to Phoenix AZ with her family when she was five years old. Nell was a professional artist and an accomplished pianist. She lived in Phoenix, and in Glendale and Santa Barbara, California. She married first when she was 17 (husband unknown); a marriage which her father immediately had annulled. Her second marriage was to----- Strahan, who worked for the National Parks Service. This marriage ended in divorce. Nell next married (3) Clarence E. McCoy, (4) Walter Bickel, (5) Clarence McCoy, (6) Walter Bickel, and last (7) Clarence McCoy ( b. Missouri 6 Aug, 1885, d. Santa Barbara CA 1963), an employee of the Santa Fe Railroad for 30 years.
Nell and Clarence "Mack" adopted a daughter, Rosalie in 1930. Mildred Rosalie McCoy was born May 19, 1930, the daughter of James Garrett (Lena Rhodes Garrett's son) and Mildred --------. Nell and Mack adopted her when she was less than one week old. Rosalie married in 1949 to Robert Bonnette. She died in a traffic accident 16 October, 1949 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Nell spent at least thirty years researching family genealogy, traveling to Boston, Rhode Island and New York, as well as corresponding over the years with numerous relatives and sources. It is only because of her efforts that any part of this family genealogy is possible, and it is regrettable that no other family member at the time seemed to take much interest or appreciate her efforts in this undertaking.
Nell died at her home, 2724 Foothill Rd. Santa Barbara CA, on September 9, 1965.
