The Gardener was my granddaddy, Claude. When he wasn't at work at Hadleys Printing Co. in down town L A CA., he was in his garden.
He gardened all year long. In the summer he would push his lawn mower over the half acre lot he owned in Monrovia CA. His skin turned the darkest tan and the sweat dripped off his dark curly hair. He always wore his "cap", and most often his sunglasses. In winter, he had this ratty old sweater he kept by the door just for gardening as well as his winter cap. you know, one of those wool caps with the little bill that Irishmen wear. He clipped, and pruned, and raked and swept. My grandma, Ethel, did most of the planting. They had fruit trees, walnut trees, where the hammock hung, California Pepper trees that were huge and hung to the ground, there was a vegetable garden, and where there were no trees or gadens there was a lawn. I don't know what or if he did his thinking in the garden, but he certainly was most happy and content there.
