James was one of the first three constables in Rockingham County, North Carolina.
James was also a constable in Fairfax County, Virgina in the years 1769 and 1771.
In 1759, John Rhodes (James' father) was Constable and Undersheriff in Fairfax County.
There is a marriage record from Montgomery County, Maryland that shows a James Rhodes marrying Mary Garrett (also spelled Garrott).
Both James and Sanford lived/owned land on or near Fisher or Fishing Creek in Rockingham County, which would put them on the Mayo River in the Price/Stoneville area of the county.
James Rhodes had only one son, according to the 1790 and 1800 census records of the same county. The year the son disappears is the first year that Sanford appears for the first time as head of his own household.
