Jospeh and Catherine are listed in the 1850 Stokes County, North Carolina census. They are found in the Quaker Gap District. Joseph, age 40, is listed as a farmer. His wife is, Katy, 45. Their children are as follows: Eva J., 12; Mary A., 8; John A., 5; William M., 2.
Josph and Catherine are listed in the 1870 Scott County, Virginia census. They are listed in the Decalb Township. Joseph is 55, works as a farm laborer, and is from North Carolina. Catherine is 60, keeps house, and is also from North Carolina. Their son, William M. (Martin), 21, a farm laborer, lives with them, and is listed as from North Carolina. They are neighbors with the John Darnell family, the Joseph Babb family, and the Martin Darnell family. The Rhodes, Darnells, and Babbs eventually intermarry.
Also, in the 1870 Scott County,Census, but in the Taylor Township, a Haywood Rodes, age 18, farm laborer, from Virginia, is listed among the household of Rufus Fugate. I am certain that this is James Haywood Rhodes, son of Joseph and Catherine. By 1870, he must have been working the Fugate farm as either a field hand or tenant farmer. Either way, the relationship between the Rufus Fugate family and the Haywood Rhodes family was strong. When Haywood Rhodes died, he was buried in the Fugate Cemetery on their farm in Rye Cove. His grave is not far from Rufus' grave.
Joseph and Catherine are listed in the 1880 Scott County, census. A listing in Taylor, Scott County, shows Joseph Roads, 65 (born in North Carolina, 1815) and Catherine, 70 (born in North Carolina, 1810) with no one else in the household.
