Obituary for Charlotte Rhodes, Kingsport Times News
KINGSPORT ? Charlotte Mary (Hale) Rhodes, 70, died Friday (Sept. 3, 1999) at Holston Valley Hospital and Medical Center after an extended illness.
Born in Wise, Virginia. March 16, 1929, to John Edward and Cora Lee Hale. She was the youngest of nine children. Her father was a renown carpenter, artisan, and musician, throughout Appalachia. He presented several items of handcrafted furniture and musical instruments to a number of U.S. presidents and American leaders. She moved to Kingsport in 1940 following her fathers death.
Mrs. Rhodes was a graduate of Dobyns-Bennett High School, and attended business school following graduation. Prior to marriage, she was employed as a bookkeeper First National Bank, Holston Valley Hospital, and Moore & Walker. She worked at home, following marriage, caring for her husband, children, and mother, Cora Hale, until her death in 1971.
She was married to James H. Rhodes, native of Scott County, Virginia. on July 14, 1957. They had two sons. She and her family were members of St. Matthew United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, William Jennings Hale, Carl Hale and Lanson Hale; her sister, Nanna Mae Lane; and half brother, Kingsley Hale.
Surviving are her husband, James H. Rhodes; two sons, Stephen (a United Methodist pastor, living in Richmond, Virginia.) and Kenneth Rhodes,(a airplane mechanic, living in Morristown, Tenn.); two daughters-in-law, Lynn Rasor (Richmond) and Felicia Rhodes (Morristown); five grandchildren, Cora, Hannah, Sarah, Gabriella and Abraham(Richmond); two brothers, J.E. Hale (Buchanan Dam, Texas) and Alfred Hale (Garland, Dallas County, Texas); two sisters, Esther Collins and Louvenia Bond, both of Kingsport.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Oak Hill Funeral Home.
Services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Matthew?s United Methodist Church with the Rev. Chris Carter and the Rev. Stephen Rhodes officiating.
A graveside service will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.
