621 | John Rhodes was a Constable and Undersheriff in Fairfax County, Virginia. Court records show that John Rhodes made a court appearance to move that James Rhodes did not have to pay taxes. The Rhodes family of Stafford County, appears to be the same Rhodes family of Fairfax County. The Rhodes family first appears in Stafford County, around 1739 on a land deed with other names (Willoby Newton). There was also a William Rhodes who was born in Fairfax County, Virginia, in 1745. He dies around 1830 in Champaign County, Ohio. He fought in the Revolutionary War. He enlisted in Fairfax County, Virginia, 1775. Campaign County, Ohio, records list some family in Ohio as James and Sanford Rhodes. From "The Descendents of John Rhodes (of Stafford County, Virginia) Website)" John Rhodes, son of John Rhodes, was probably born before 1720, as in the 22 Jan 1739/40 will of William Sanford of Westmoreland County Virginia (Cople Parish) he refers to his daughter Martha Rhodes, who receives one cow and one calf. The couple appears later in Overwharton parish records, where Sanford Rhodes son of John & Martha Rhodes was born 13 Dec 1746. 'Son John Rhodes' was given a Desk and a cow and calf in the will of his father. A John Rhodes appears on deeds in Fairfax county Virginia - John Rhodes is a witness to an indenture made 18/19 August 1758 between Gabriel Adams and John Adams; Fairfax County, Virginia. Jno Rhodes appears in the margin of deeds recorded on 19 Feb 1761. He may still have been living as late as 1786, when the Stafford County, personal property tax list shows a J. Rhodes living w/ one white male 21+, a horse and 6 cows. (This may also be a descendant or other relative.) | Rhodes, John (I01659)

622 | John W. Randolph, son of William R. and Martha A. (Rhodes) Randolph, was born in Jackson County August 9, 1839 and was living here when the county of Roane was organized. He was a farmer and mason, and one of the energetic and prosperous men of Curtis district. In Roane County, June 5, 1862, he married Nancy A. Reed and their daughter and only child, Elizabeth J. was born Nov 18, 1862 and died Jan 10, 1863. Mrs. Randolph was a daughter of David and Susan (Carpenter) Reed who were living here when Roane County was organized, and she was born May 22, 1842. Her father was born Nov 16, 1814. She had one brother, Solomon Reed, in the Federal Army, three years a member of the 15th WV Infantry, and two brothers in the Confederate Army; John B., who served about three years, and Marcellus, who was killed in the battle of Cloyd Mountain, May 9, 1864. William R. Randolph, father of John W., served 17 months in Co. G., WV Infantry, Federal Army and died at Winchester, Va. May 9, 1863. Christopher Rhodes, grandfather of Mr. Randolph and David Reed Sr., his wife's grandfather, were soldiers in the War of 1812. [Ref: West Virginia Heritage Encyclopedia- page 341 Sup. 623 | Jonathan was a builder and carpenter along with operating a small farm. He built the home of John E. Hunt, near the Hunt school house, and it was one of the nicest homes in that secion of the country. John Hunt's wife, Catherine, had a Post Office in one room of that house, where the Harper family got their mail. The place was called Mattie, WV. Jonathan helped to build Ryan Chapel Methodist Church, which was the last thing he was able to do, as he hurt his leg while working there. It was the recurrence of old injury from childhood. He died shortly thereafter, at the age of 57. Virginia was one of the few people in the area that would make her own light bread. She frequently made it for her neighbors. She used to have a loom and wove her own carpeting, which she had in every room of her house. Her children would go to her when they needed to know the spelling of a word and she always seemed to be able to spell it correctly. Her hair was still auburn when she died. (I had my grandparents tell me about their parents - Says Sue Moore). | Harper, Jonathan Smith (I1139)

624 | Jospeh and Catherine are listed in the 1850 Stokes County, North Carolina census. They are found in the Quaker Gap District. Joseph, age 40, is listed as a farmer. His wife is, Katy, 45. Their children are as follows: Eva J., 12; Mary A., 8; John A., 5; William M., 2. Josph and Catherine are listed in the 1870 Scott County, Virginia census. They are listed in the Decalb Township. Joseph is 55, works as a farm laborer, and is from North Carolina. Catherine is 60, keeps house, and is also from North Carolina. Their son, William M. (Martin), 21, a farm laborer, lives with them, and is listed as from North Carolina. They are neighbors with the John Darnell family, the Joseph Babb family, and the Martin Darnell family. The Rhodes, Darnells, and Babbs eventually intermarry. Also, in the 1870 Scott County,Census, but in the Taylor Township, a Haywood Rodes, age 18, farm laborer, from Virginia, is listed among the household of Rufus Fugate. I am certain that this is James Haywood Rhodes, son of Joseph and Catherine. By 1870, he must have been working the Fugate farm as either a field hand or tenant farmer. Either way, the relationship between the Rufus Fugate family and the Haywood Rhodes family was strong. When Haywood Rhodes died, he was buried in the Fugate Cemetery on their farm in Rye Cove. His grave is not far from Rufus' grave. Joseph and Catherine are listed in the 1880 Scott County, census. A listing in Taylor, Scott County, shows Joseph Roads, 65 (born in North Carolina, 1815) and Catherine, 70 (born in North Carolina, 1810) with no one else in the household. | Rhodes, Joseph (I01653)
