Lincolnshire, England couple spend two decades building Saxon house in their back garden

Retired teachers Steve and Judith Jones built the home over 20 years. They have just had a new roof thatching crowdfunded on Kickstarter. The pair use the house to teach local children about the Saxon era. They don’t live in the hut – but have admitted to sleeping in it several times

One of my Rhodes ancestors came from the Island of Guernsey to Virginia in the 1600s. I have always interested finding out about the lands of our forefathers, and when my daughter sent me a link to this video I felt compelled to post it. The video is of hurdy gurdy player Clare Salaman, playing an old Guernesiaise folk tune.

First Europeans ‘weathered Ice Age’

From the BBC News: The genetic ancestry of the earliest Europeans survived the ferocious Ice Age that took hold after the continent was initially settled by modern people. That is the suggestion of a study of DNA from a male hunter who lived in western Russia 36,000 years ago.
His genome is not exactly like those of people who lived in Europe just after the ice sheets melted 10,000 years ago.
But the study suggests the earliest Europeans did contribute their genes to later populations . .See the whole story here.

9 Dec.1775, the Revolutionary War Battle of Great Bridge VA was fought, which was one first battles of the American Revolution in the south. Fighting on the Continental side the 2nd VA Reg., and the Culpeper Minutemen, with Colonel Vail NC men. At least one Rhodes was there, namely, Pvt. William Rhodes of the 2nd Virginia.
