On August 2, 1956, Albert Woolson died at an age estimated between 105 and 109. He was the last Union veteran of the American Civil War and probably the last veteran from either side of that conflict (the record is disputed).
That chapter of living memory closed. Woolson was buried with full military honors, including a flyover of US Air Force jets. You can view photos of the event at the link. (Thanks to John Farrier, Neatorama.com).
