    Notes:

Excerpt from data compiled and written by Emma Swinney Wa l ker, Blakesburg, Iowa, 1928-29.

James Swinney, Jr., third son of James Swinney, Sr., and S u san Hammock Swinney, was born in Monroe County, Virginia , S ept. 22, 1793. He was five years old when Napoleon fou gh t the famous battle of the Pyramids of Egypt. He was tw ent y-two when the battle of Waterloo was fought. George W ashi ngton was serving his second term as President of th e Unite d States at Philadelphia when he was born. He die d the yea r that Iowa became a State.

Jane Gartin (or Garton) daughter of Griffith and Hannah (K i ller) Gartin, was born May 4, 1801, in Virginia. This ho no rable couple was married April 9, 1818, [per marriage ce rti ficate ]and in the State of Vir gini a were born to them six children: Elijah, Delaney, Si anna , Isaac, Gartin and Irvin.

When the Northwest Territory was opened for settlement th i s family emigrated west to Decatur County, Indiana, on No v . 23, 1828.

He first entered 160 acres and later added an 80 acres. T h e father built a log house about 13 miles southwest of Gr ee nsburg, clearing the land about them, planning for a hom e f or his family.

We are told that a daughter, Matilda Jane, born after th e y moved there, was taken ill and passed away and undertak er s not being as plentiful as today, they were at a loss a s t o procuring a casket, as even lumber was not easily obt aine d. So finally they cut the desired length of a hollo w tree , made ends in it, after halving it, and placed th e body o f this little baby girl within and buried her o n a little h ill near there, thus starting the "Swinney gra veyard." I t is here that James Swinney, the father, was l ater buried . We are told this burying ground is now aband oned and i s in only a fair state of preservation.

During the residence of the Swinney family here, seven mo r e children were born to them. They are Vincent, Delilah , M atilda Jane, Caroline, Lucinda, James Harvey and Minerv a. M ATILDA JANE (the above mentioned) was born April 18, 1 832 , and died June 15, 1833. VINCENT was born March 24, 18 30 , and died Sept. 22, 1840, and buried beside the littl e sis ter.

After a time, the father of this large family erected a br i ck house, one of the first in Decatur County. It is sti l l standing and is in good condition, and except for the a dd ition of a porch on the front, it looks just as it did t hen.

In 1846 James Swinney came to Davis County, Iowa, and ente r ed several hundred acres of rich, rolling land between F o x River and Soap Creek, and, we might say, along the C.R. I. & P. Railroad track, east of the now Bloomfield, Ottumw a ro ad, and two other tracts of land in the vicinity of Mo ulton . Some of these tracts were for his sons who wante d to est ablish homes for themselves in this rich prairie l and of Io wa.

He returned to Indiana, a two weeks drive in covered wago n , and while preparing to move his family to their new hom e , he became ill and passed away at 8:00 p.m. Aug. 4, 184 6 . His death was a result of cold contracted while return in g to his family. He was a man who possessed a pleasin g per sonality, we are told. That he was noted for his rea l hone sty, and that he was known to be very particular a s to hi s personal appearance. He and his companion were B aptists . He is buried about one-half mile from the bric k house.

The widowed mother did not come to Iowa for a couple of ye a rs. Then finally in 1848, she with her children, Carolin e , Delilah, Lucinda, James Harvey and Minerva, started ou t i n a one-horse carriage, a very attractive one with glas s wi ndows and trimmed all around with fringe. The older b oys t ook the household goods in ox wagons. Here she settl ed o n what we know as the James S. Stark farm, north of Du nnvil le.

We were told that this family had many personal possessio n s that most families in those days could not boast, suc h a s some unusual household furniture, some real silverwar e, l inens and decorated china.

This wonderful mother and her honored children, together w i th their companions, played an important part in the deve lo pment of the community in which they settled. Even thou g h they passed through the hardships, known only to the pi on eers, they were given to a hospitality unknown today. T hei r lives were useful and helpful. Even though their hom es c onsisted of only one room, often times, yet there wa s alway s room to welcome both old and young, whether it b e a socia l, a singing, a prayer meeting, an apple peeling , a molasse s boiling, a taffy pull, or whatever else.

They were regular attendants at church, going on horseba c k or in wagons, and as the family increased in populatio n , they added a new seat board, as needed.

There were days and days between mails.

They spun their flax, carded their wool, did the family we a ving, made their own jeans and linsey-woolsey; the wome n "s et up" ash hoppers, run off lye, and boiled off gallon s an d gallons of soft soap.

They made their own candles for lights.

They cooked over the fireplaces where the family sat, burn i ng their faces and freezing their backs in winter.

When company or even threshers came, they had to plan an d p repare the meal, after their arrival.

When company came for overnight, beds were made down and t h e men very courteously stepped outside until the ladies p ut out the candle and retire; then the men came in to retir e.

The men had few kinds of machinery, so farmed on a narro w s cale. Yet, we cannot but know they were happy. They li ve d real lives and left us a history of which we love to t alk . Not one of these left his children a name with a sta in . The daughter, Caroline, born Sept. 27, 1836, died of t yph oid fever Jan. 1, 1852, and is buried in the little cem eter y in the field southwest of Chequest, on west from th e Aaro n Emanuel home.

This unusual mother cared for nursing babes for twenty-fi v e years. She died at the home of her daughter, Lucinda a n d family, south of Bloomfield, on Nov. 24, 1876, and is b ur ied in the Dunnville cemetery beside her son, Irvin an d hi s family.

!Buried near Greensburg, IN. (Swinney Family; Emma Walk e r Swinney; p. 7)

    !They had 14 children. (James L. Gore, ltr of 20 July 199 4 , p. 15)

James moved to Indiana, with wife and five children in fa l l of 1828. (Pioneer History of Davis County, Iowa.)

!Left VA in Nov 1828 and arrived in Decatur County, IN o n N ov 23rd. (James L. Gore, Ltr of 20 July 1994, p. 15 ) In s ame ltr Mr. Gore records that James also held two t racts o f land in Appanoose County, near Moulton.

James married Martha Jane Gartin on 9 Apr 1818 in Monroe County, VA. Martha (daughter of Griffith Gartin and Hannah Killer) was born on 4 May 1801 in VA; died on 24 Nov 1876 in Davis Co, IA; was buried in Dunnville Cem, IA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 7.  Martha Jane Gartin was born on 4 May 1801 in VA (daughter of Griffith Gartin and Hannah Killer); died on 24 Nov 1876 in Davis Co, IA; was buried in Dunnville Cem, IA.

Generation: 4

  1. 12.  James Semore Swinney was born about 1750 in Ireland [County Cork] (son of Moses Sweney and Ann (Seymour) Semore); died on 28 Aug 1836 in Monroe Co, VA.

Emma Swinney Walker relates that three Swinney brothers ca m e from County Cork, Ireland, and settled on the Susquehan n a River in Pennsylvania. One brother may have returne d t o Ireland. The brother Moses settled in Monroe County , VA . Emma covers James Swinney and Susanna Hammock and l ist s eleven children.

The Swinney & Dunlap Family History by Lee Ora May Swinne y , as given to her by two widow aunts. The aunts are: Ma r y (May) Parthena Swinney Overbury, and Maude (Myrtle) Le e S winney McAfee.

According to Myrtle & May Swinney,as told to them by the i r grandfather, William Christian Swinney, and William bei n g the son of Samuel Harrison Swinney, claimed that Jame s Se more Swinney was from Cork County, Ireland. This fac t is t o be researched.

James Semore Swinney was born sometime between 1750 and 17 6 0 based on his reported age in the 1830 Monroe County, V A c ensus, as age between 70 and 80. This from James L. Go re i n 1999.

*The Sir name was always spelled Swinney, with the Swinney / Price descendants and they did not know James Swinney's m id dle name.

    The following data was supplied, 10 August 1996, by Jame s L . Gore to Carol & Jerry Nelson, 5440 Horse Ridge Way, B onit a, CA 91902, phone #619 479-6242; e-mail address: jdn 3434@ aol.com

Quote: James was one of the first settlers of the New Riv e r country. On 19 Mar 1796 a James Swinney was on the ta x l ist for Greenbrier County, VA.

James was a soldier in the "Indian Wars" in Caperton's Com p any. Fought the indians in Kanawha Valley, VA and was pr ob ably with Gen. Lewis at the battle of Point Pleasant.

James' Will probated Sep. 1836 in Monroe County, VA.

James Semore Swinney Sr.'s wife is given as Susan Hammoc k i n "Swinney Family" by Emma Swinney Walker.

In a "corrective" statement written by James L. Gore , i n a letter dated 18 Feb. 1999, claims he was misquote d an d did not give his permission to William Sanders who w rot e in his Vol 1 book, A New River Heritage, the Indian d at a listed in the next few paragraphs. In Vol. !!! Sander s m ade a retraction of his statements. Per James Gore, th es e were Notes only, and were only working notes. Two of J ame s and Susanna's daughters married into the Gore family . Pe r James L. Gore in a letter dated 20 July 1994; attac hmen t dated 13 November 1981 up-dated: "The first eight ch ildr en were by ____Hammock and the latter three children w ere b y Susanna_____. Susanna's maiden name is unknown whe n sh e married James in 1793, she was Lilly."

As one reads further, some of the above confusion on wiv e s clears. Daughter Anna Swinney born 1779 at Pittsylvani a , VA., married James William Wiley (See Wiley Family Gro u p Sheets). According to James Wiley: He married Annie Sw ee ney whose mother was an Indian named Wenomah. Per Jame s L . Gore letter of 18 Feb 1999, his research does not ind icat e any Indian heritage . James L. Gore's "History of th e Wil ey Family" by Sanders in NRH, Vol 3, page 212, quotes : Jam es Wiley Sr. born 1777 at what is now Shawnee Lake , WV; die d 2/28/1857 in Mercer County. James married 179 9 in Monro e Co., VA., to Anna Sweeney Born 1775 at what i s now Shawne e Lake, WV; died 18 Oct 1863 at Shawnee Lake , WV. Anna Swi nney is the daughter of James Sweeney and h is Shawnee wife , Wimona.

*The name Wenomah will be spelled various ways throughou t t he Swinney data.

Jacklyn Gay Price McLaughlin was told by her father that t h ere was Indian blood in the Swinney background. Gay's si st ers and brothers were also told that their grandparent s wer e half breed indians, and first cousins. We have no t prove n this.

James L. Gore who supplied the Shawnee Indian wife, feel s t hat the first eight children are from the Indian wife , as S usanna Hammock lived to be 104, so one would believ e she wo uld be the second wife. Further research must b e done on b oth wives. The Lilly sir name may be a mix up ? There ar e many Gore/Lilly marriages, plus Pennington/L illy marriage s mixed into the Swinney family.

Regarding the brothers of James Semore Swinney Sr. Much r e search needs to be done. We know James had a brother Mos e s (per Emma Swinney Walker).

The Will of Moses Sweney dated 30 Apr 1784 at Pittsylvan i a Co., VA; Abstract of Wills 1768-1800, Book 975.5665 H87 4 , page 99: Names, James Semore Sweney and other childre n no t named, to receive Moveables equally divided. With t he he lp of this Will, we discovered the father of James Sw inne y and that James was named James Semore Swinney.

Emma Swinney Walker's statement that one of the three brot h ers arriving in America from County Cork, Ireland, was na me d Moses. This Moses would be the son of Moses Sweney an d An n Semore/Seymour.

Further, Jacklyn Gay Price/Swinney (McLaughlin) receiv e d a Revolutionary War Declaration for pension for a Jose p h Swinney from Haskell D. Shumate, Star Route 4, Box 30C , U nion, West VA. 24983. This letter was mailed July 26 , 1985 . Gay along with her sisters' Lynne and Delpha, me t Haskel l Shumate while in Union, West Virginia the earl y part of J uly 1985.

It is possible that Joseph Swinney may be another son of M o ses Sweney and Ann Semore/Seymour.

The Swinney/Gore data sent by James L. Gore has many Shuma t e familes married with Swinneys, as well as Gore.

Haskell Shumate feels Joseph Swinney is connected with Jam e s Semore Swinney Sr., as he applied for his pension at Un io n, West Virginia, and was living near James. Joseph Swi nne y stated his age about 82 years in the Application date d 18 26. That would make Joseph Swinney born around 1744 an d wo uld be about James Swinney's age. Also, James Swinne y stat ed in Joseph Swinney's Application for Pension tha t he is t he half brother of Joseph Swinney.

*Virginia B. Sweeny, P. O. Box 483, Osterville, MA 02655 s e nt a letter to Gay, dated 15 April 1989. In her letter s h e stated she corresponded with Nona J. Armstrong of Sant a B arbara, CA., and that Norma's great great grandfathe r is S amuel Neil Sweeny. Samuel was on the 1790 U. S. Cens us, Mil ton, PA.

What is facinating, this Sweeny family has almost the iden t ical story as Emma Swinney Walker, but with different des ce ndants:

"There were three brothers who came from Ireland to Pennsy l vania in the 1700's...Samuel Sweeny was in Milton, Northu mb erland County,PA., on the Susquehanna River in 1795. I t i s thought that one of his brothers, Alexander Sweeny we nt t o the southern colonies."

James married Susanna (Susan) Hammock in 1773. Susanna (daughter of Richard Hammock and Mary ? [Hammock]) was born in 1756 in Pittsylvania, VA; died in 1850-1860. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 13.  Susanna (Susan) Hammock was born in 1756 in Pittsylvania, VA (daughter of Richard Hammock and Mary ? [Hammock]); died in 1850-1860.

    Notes:

Lowell Goar shows James Swinney's wife as Winnoa____.

James Wiley, who married Annie Swinney, claims that the mo t her of Annie was an Indian named Wenomah, in 1795.

Source on above: A New River Heritage, Vol, I; William Sa n ders, 1991, p. 120.

Per James L. Gore, Susanna died between 1850 and 1860.

1850 Census, Monroe Co., West Virginia, dated the 13th o f S eptember lists the following household; Dwelling 371, p ag e 80:
