2. | Richard Sanford Rhodes was born on 26 Aug 1822 in Rockingham County, North Carolina (son of Sanford Rhodes and Johanna Barnes); died on 13 May 1865 in Newport News, Virginia. Notes:
Richard Sanford Rhodes (b. August 26, 1822, d. May 13, 1865) married Joanna Barnes (b. April 11, 1822, d. December 5, 1901) on January 23, 1844. The family lived in Rockingham County until after the births of their two oldest daughters. About 1850 they moved into Stokes County. In the Civil War, Richard Sanford Rhodes served with the 45th N. C. Regiment of the Confederate Army. He became ill and was hospitalized near Richmond, being there at the time of Lee's surrender. Along with other patients, he was taken prisoner and moved to the prison hospital in Newport News, Virginia, where he died only one month and four days: following the surrender. According to records, he was buried on P. West's farm near Newport News.
Joanna Barnes Rhodes, daughter of William Barnes (wife, Mary), survived her husband and, at the age of 43, began the task of bringing up the family alone. Her oldest daughter, Mary Susan was 20 at the time. She would be married 16 months later.
A family story relates that during the war, Mary and one of the other children were taking the family mule into the woods to hide it away from the approaching Yankee soldiers. However, they were overtaken, and a soldier left them his worn-out mule in the place of their own animal. They were dismayed; however, some time later, after they had fed it and brought it back to health, it was a much better animal than the first one.
Another note concerns a license found in the Rhodes family Bible, receipting payment to the government for tax on homemade whiskey. Richard S. Rhodes must have operated a "government still."
The children of the Rhodes family were: Mary Susan (b. Dec. 5, 1844, d. Nov. 28, 1913) married Joseph M. Spencer (See Alexander Spencer). Elizabeth "Liz" Fountain (b. Apr. 9, 1848, d. Apr. 26, 1936); William Joel (b. Nov. 22, 1850fd. Sept. 8, 1935), married Paullina "Pliny" Frances Martin; Sally C. (b. May 21, 1853, d. Oct. 23, 1920), married Dave Snider; John (b. Jan. 7, 1856, d. May 10,1863), died at the ageof7. George D. (b. May 30, 1858, d. Dec. 28, 1901) married Sarah Martin; Martha (b. Dec. 26, 1861, d. Jan. 27, 1945r, married W.G. "Bill" Eads; and Richard Jasper "Dick" (b. Aug. 21,1863, d. Feb. 1936), married Rosa Lee Martin.
Since Sarah and Paullina Martin were sisters, with Rosa Martin being a half-sister, this was a family in which three brothers married three sisters.
It is believed that Richard Sanford Rhodes was the son of Sanford Rhodes, who was born about 177 in Maryland. He was living in Rockingham County by 1820, and his wife was Johanna (last name unknown), was born in 1782 in North Carolina.
