The Rhodes family embraces those who spell the name as: "RHODES, ROADS,
RHOADS, RODES, ROODS," Originally de Rodez PROLOGUE" In upland Norway circa 860 A.D. there was a man of great wealth named
Rogenwald. He was the Earl of Maere and
Ruamdahl in Norway. Prince Rollo (the Dane), b 860, son of Rogenwald, went
south to France, with visions of
conquest. He engaged King Charles in battle. The results were, King Charles
of France, made a concession to Rollo
and ceded to Prince Rollo the province of Neustria and his daughter Princess
Gisele. Rollo named the area the Duchy
of Normandy and on marrying Princess Gisele, King Charles made Rollo the
first Duke of Normandy, France in the
year 912 A.D. Rouen was made it's capitol. Rollo also married Poppa de
Senlis, daughter of Barengaruis, Count
of Bayeaux, a descendant of Charlemagne. Bernard, Lord Coucy half brother of
Poppa (Popee). (Spelled Rodes, Rhodes, Roads, Rhodes, Rhoades) Some
publications state that the name Rhodes is from the Island of Rhodes in the
Mediterranean Sea. In 1066 Willimus and a brother Hugh accompanied William
the Conqueror to England. The Conqueror awarded them a Moiety in
Chester England. Hugh went back to Normandy, Willimus stayed in England, on
the Moiety. "Changes from the information contained with the Coat-of-Arms as
