Family Records of Thomas Rhodes of Caliwassi Island, SC

Thomas Rhodes (1775-1809) was born in Bridgenorth, Shropshire, England, son of George Rhodes and Elizabeth "Betsy" Bache, grandson of Thomas Rhodes and Harriet George and great grandson of Nathaniel Rhodes. He died at Caliwassi Island, SC, on April 25, 1809. He came to SC ~1792 to visit his Uncle John Rhodes of Beaufort, SC. The voyage was rough so he decided to stay.

It is said that John Rhodes, born 1747, came to America as a lad of 11. We do not know who he came over with but do not believe that he was accompanied by any other of our Rhodes family. He became a planter and a merchant in Charleston and Beaufort with Rhodes, Bold and Company. He married Mary Talbird. He had a numbef of children but his male line was gone by ~1850. He sent his son Nathaniel Henry Rhodes to medical school in Scotland. Nathaniel later married Mary Hamilton, daughter of Gov. of SC and former US Secretary of the Navy. His grandson Nathaniel Henry Rhodes Dawson, born in 1829, a Confederate soldier married the half sister of Mary Todd Lincoln.


Thomas Rhodes married Mary Wright in Charleston in 1796. Their children were Thomas Wright Rhodes and Sarah Rhodes. After her death he married ~1800, Mary Cater, daughter of Thomas Cater and Rachel Miles Cater. Their first son, George Rhodes, signed the SC Ordinance of Secession. He married first to Thirza Robert and after her death he married her sister Eliza Jane Robert.

One of his sons, Augustus Rhodes, was killed at Gettysburg. Thomas and Mary had a daughter Rachel Cater Rhodes, ~1806 who married Ulysses Maner Robert. My line is from their other son Nathaniel Henry Rhodes born ~1805 and died ~1843.


1. Nathaniel Henry Rhodes married ~1830 in Barnwell District, SC, to Susan Julia Hagood, daughter of Gideon Hagood and Harriet Peckham (Yonge) Hagood.


2. Thomas Hagood Rhodes (1832-1918) born Barnwell District, SC,. married in 1860 to the widow Martha Elizabeth (Clayton) Beard (1834-1899), daughter of Van da Vastine Jamison Clayton and Sarah Jeter.


3. Stephen Peter Rhodes (1866-1945) born Colleton District, SC, died Jenkins County, GA, married in 1898 Laura Ellis Smith, daughter of William Pinckney Smith and Martha Josephine Nunnally.


4. Thomas William Rhodes (1904-1948) born Screven County, GA, died Sylvania, GA, married in 1926 to Orrie Leola Clayton, daughter of Joseph Kisler Clayton and Bessie Parker.


5. Kisler Clayton Rhodes born Sylvania, GA, Feb. 24, 1940, married Nina LaRose (Stokes) Mims in 1966. Divorced 1974. Her two children by previous marriage, James and Robin, adopted and names changed to Rhodes
