    • Notes from the Rhodes Family Tree compiled by Philip Rhodes Tate:

When Benjamin Sr.'s wife died, "he and his four sons left England for Canada. This was in 1841. They located in Brockville, On. near the St. Lawrence River. They lived there until 1843. Then they went to St. Lawrence County, New York near Ogdensburg. They farmed there until 1847. They then moved to Chicago. It is believed that Joseph had a meat market there for two or three years. His father and brothers may have been involved also. It was in the vicinity of Blue Island. Philip worked for one year during this time as a proprieter of a hotel on the Galena & Chicago R.R. about 16 miles from Chicago. Around 1850 the family went toFreeport, Ill. Philip and William bought a farm of 400 acres. It was unimproved prairie land which they improved. In 1853, Philip sold his interest in the farm, then went on a gold expedition to Australia with his brother, Joseph. They stayed in Melbourne a short while and then wandered over Australia mainly along the southwest coastal area prospecting and mining. They returned in 1856 to Freeport.

"Philip (Phillip in the Bible record) b. Dec. 24, 1818 in Preston-Burstwick, East of Hull, East riding, Yorkshire, England. He lived on a farm, and received a common school education. At an early age, he commenced farming in Yorksire and energetically continued it until he, with his father and three brothers left England for Canada in 1841. The details of their early life in North America has already been given. When he returned from Australia with his brother Joseph in 1856, he kept a meat market, ILL (sic) with his brothers which proved profitable. Sometime afterward, he engaged in farming in Stephenson County, IL (Freeport is located in this co.)"

Letter from Arthur J Rhodes to Philip Rhodes Tate states that Philip and family lived in Clay Center, KS at one time (before 1940.)
