37. John Melancthon Rhodes was born on 29 Aug 1849 and died on 20 Apr 1921 at age 71.

General Notes: John M. Rhodes (August 29, 1849-April 20, 1921), son of Caleb Rhodes (181 8-1896), was an active and influential churchman and businessman in Lincolnton for some fifteen years prior to his death. When he married to Margaret Aderholdt in December, 1870, he settled on a farm in Gaston County; w as Register of Deeds for four years, ending in December, 1882; engaged in the textile business in Gaston for a while; later formed a co-partnership with George B. Hiss, cotton manufacturer, and established the Rhodhiss Mills. Severing connection with that company in 1906, he came to Lincolnton, built the Rhodes Mill, which he operated until his death, after which his son, D. P. Rhodes, took charge of the business and succeeded well with the enterprise.
Mr. Rhodes not only possessed fine business capacity, but was just as act ive as a member of the Lutheran Church. He was a moving spirit in organizing the Gaston College in Dallas in 1883, and a trustee of Lenoir (now Lenoir-Rhyne) College, located in Hickory.
Mr. Rhodes married the second time to Nina, daughter of G. Edward and Katie (Rhodes) Crowell of Lincolnton.

John married Margaret Aderholdt in Dec 1870.

   49 M    i. David Polycarp Rhodes was born in 1871 and died on 21 Jan 1936 at age 65.

John next married Nina Crowell, daughter of G. Edward Crowell and Katie Rhodes, after 1870.

39. Oliver P. Rhodes .

General Notes: Oliver P. Rhodes settled in Dallas in 1878 and engaged in mercantile business and farming. He is a fine citizen and a loyal member of the Luther an Church. He had seven children and gave to each of them a college education or its equivalent.

Oliver married Sarah Alice Hoffman, daughter of Jonas Hoffman and Unknown, on 16 Nov 1881.

Children from this marriage were:

Caroline married Rev. Carl H. Deal.
