John Waterman Rhodes at age 19 mustered into Civil War 24 May 1861 Illinois 13th Infantry Company B; discharged 8 June 1863 and commissioned Second-Lieutenant Third Mississippi Colored Troops; promoted to First-Lieutenant 10 October 1863, and to Captain 20 September 1864; discharged 8 March 1866.
Thomas Brown Rhodes enlisted at Chatham, on August 10, 1861, in Company A, 3rd Illinois Cavalry, when he was 18 years old. He was discharged for promotion June 18, 1864, and became Captain of Co. A, 53 U.S. Colored Infantry, having been enrolled June 21st. He was discharged March 8, 1866, at Vicksburg, Miss. Hence he served nearly five years during the Civil War; two years as a private in Co. A., 3rd Illinois Cavalry; one year as 1st Lieutenant and nearly two years as Captain of Co. A, 53rd U.S. Vol. Inf.
George Francis Rhodes, also listed as George F. Rhoades and Rhoads served in 3rd Ill Cavalry, Company G during the Civil War, attaining the rank of Private. At age 20, he enlisted on Feb. 15, 1865 at Dixon, Illinois and served until the end of the war, mustering out in Minnesota.
