Dear Eva,,
Nobody had ever told me you had a whole big family-why? I better tell you about
Uncle George before I forget. He was my mother's own brother-they had several
half brothers. I have the names somewhere but I could not remember where
yesterday, but their grandfather was James RHODES. He had three sons:James J.
Benjamin, and Jacob. Later I saw in the Duplin co. Historical Write up about a
where a Joseph (T. or J>) RHODES, surveyor and teacher was a member of the
Board of Trustees of the 6th District of Schools in duplin Co. He was
W.H.RHODES',son. When I found the records Aunt Della sent me some brothers of
James J. RHODES on a margin was the name Joseph T. but I couldn't tell whether
he was the James RHODES (no dates) or his son James J. RHODES. James J. ws
mmarried twice-Uncle George and John and Mary Elizabeth (Betzy,Bettie) my
mother, were children by his second wife. He was a Baptist Minister born Aug.
26, 1804, died March 1872. He married Winniford NOBLES, both lived at Trenton,
NC. She was Born April 25, 1812, died april 1872.
Uncle George was born April 18, 1839, didn't say when he died said in Florida,
but he must have been 89 because he was over 80 when they moved to Fla. Myrtle
was teaching school in Bravard, N.C. Cousin Ottie left him with us while she
ran up, on the train, to see her. I can't remember which child was the baby. I
reckoned time by my children. Elizabeth our first was 19 months old when we
moved from Augusta to Spartanburg-Aug.1, 1914. The day the first world war
broke out. We stayed at a large boarding house on N. church St. near the STore.
Gilbert our first son was born on St. John St. in Jan. 1915. OUr second son was
born Aug. 4, 1917. The War was over and we moved out near Converse College.
Lillian was born over on Thomas St. too, Nov. 23, 1918. Then about 10 years
later Joanna came along. Elizabeth and Gilbert were in college and wanted to
have them to ride with them-Elizabeth finished Converse then helped her daddy
in the store for a while then married NOrman JOHNSON. They had a daughter Joyce
and a son NOrman,Jr. Lib died of cancer after teaching in the city schools. She
was fifty two and passed away May 23, 1962. She was as pretty as always, lovely
brown sweet eyes with blond hair until brown, then a soft brown, she taught
math until 2 weeks before she died.
In one year her daughter passed away after only 3 months illness, her son
NOrman joined the navy after he finished high school, went to Chicago,
Savannah, Newfoundland, Memphis,Tenn-then California, Japan, Vietnam, then back
to Key West, Fla. He says he is to go to Bonn. in July then after his tour
there he will be out. He has a wife and a darling little girl about 4 1/2 years
old and a boy about 2 1/2 both precious.

Annie married James Gilbert Jones, son of Gilbert Americus Jones and Charity Elizabeth Outlaw, on 22 Jun 1911 in Lenoir Co., N.C. James was born on 6 Aug 1884 in Duplin Co., N.C., died on 5 Feb 1969 in Spartanburg, S.C. at age 84, and was buried in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
