FAMILY HISTORY-Levi was born in the Pollocksville district of Jones Co.,N.C.
Traditionally, his mother was Cherokee Indian, but this has not been
documented. the Indian has shown up in a number of his descendants. the one
picture of him that I have found does show a lot of the Indian features, but it
is after he is an old man. His mother died when he was about 4 years old, in
child birth with his brother Brantley. When the war between the states began,
Levi and Anna Jane were living in Cypress Creek Township, Comfort, Jones
Co.,N.C. on a farm they were operating as share croppers. On 3 Feb. 1863, Co.K,
4th Cavalry, N.C. State Troops, C.S.A.--made camp on Reedy Branch. On 19 March
1863, at the age of 34, Levi enlisted in that Unit. for 3 months Co.K.
patrolled the rivers and roads in Jones, Craven and Carteret Counties. On the
4th of May 1863, the patrol he was with was involved in a skirmish in Carteret
Co., with Union forces, 2 men were killed and 12 captured. He was taken to Ft.
Monroe, Va. wehre he was held untill traded back in a prisioner exchange 28 May
1863. He was reported present and accounted for until deischarged in Nov. 1864.
While he was away at War, his wife Anna Jane was a very respected mid-wife and
uneducated nurse. Traditionally, she saved everything she earned and buried it
under a large elm tree until Levi came home. They pooled everthing they had and
bought the plantation they had been sharecropping on, $600 for 338 acres. On 12
Feb 1869 theyfiled in court for a homestead exemption on this farm. On 1 Oct.
1868, he paid $150 to J.W.HUFFMAN for 60 acres ofland on Nims Branch. On the
11th of Dec. 1871 he sold this same piece of land to his brother Brantley for
$60. Most of the plantation is still in thehands of some of his descendants,
HOUSTONS, & QUINNS. It is said that about 1898 or 1899, Levi decided to ploy
under a certain piece of ground that was said to be an Indian Burial ground, to
plant watermelons. When the melons were ready for harvest, he pulled one and
sat down to eat some of it to find out if it was ready. After eating he got
sick and never recovered, and in the early part of 1900 he passed away. Levi
and Janie are buried at the RHODES cemetery on the plantation that they both
loved so much. It is said that sometimes late at night you can hear Levi out in
the fields yelling at the mules, or checking on the crops. I spent a lot of
time on the old farm, doing research, and looking for the old Co.K Camp
grounds, but never did run into Levi or hear him calling.
Burial:located on Houston Rd, 1 mile of Hwy. 41 Comfort,

DEATH-Mary Elizabeth James RHODES-b.20 July 1853 d.31 Dec. 1921
On a visit in South Carolina the death of Mary E.J.RHODES occurred at a n early
hour Saturday. She died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Annie JONES,
Spartanburg, S.C. to which place she had gone a short time before Christmas for
a visit. She failed to rally from an attack of pleuro-pneumonia.
Mrs RHODES was born in Jones Co., 68 years ago. Fifty two years ago she married
Zacchaeus RHODES, whose death occurred in 1911. Thirteen children were born,
seven of whom survive, Mrs. W.J.LANGSTON, Mrs.I.S.ROCHELLE, and Mrs. W.C.SUTTON
of this city (Kinston), Mrs. Emmett HASKINS of Norfolk, Va., Mrs. Clayton GRADY
of Deep Run, Mrs. Annie JONES of Spartanburg, S.C. and John F. RHODES of New
Bern.
Mrs. RHODES was a woman of broad sympathies, of a quick human understanding and
a rare capacity for friendship, and these qualities led her into relationships
far reaching in their influence. With all the allegiances and graces of one
devoted to her domestic interests, she took a valued part in concerns of a
wider nature. She loved and labored for her church and well exemplified in her
life the principles of her faith. As a teacher in the Sunday school, a member
of the Mission Circle or in promoting by any other means the welfare of her
church, she put without reserve her best thought and effort into what she
undertook. She was an honored life member of the Woman's National Missionary
Association of the Universalist Church and was in helpfull touch with the
leaders and enterprises of that organization.
The funeral will be held at the Universalist Church, Lenoir Ave. & McLewean St.
Sunday afternoon at 3 O'clock. Mrs. Katherine B. HASKELL, Revs. Dwight A.BA..
and Harry L.CANFIELD will each take part in the service.
